Apple TV’s Neuromancer dropped its first real trailer at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and the reaction split almost immediately into what social media was calling “cooking” versus “cooked.” William Gibson, who published the novel in 1984, came down firmly on one side.
Science fiction now is almost entirely hard-core Leftist. Even military sci fi features women warriors, as hard and competent as the toughest man. Plus a plethora of women scientists and leaders.
Might I suggest the works of Neal Asher? The novels set in his "Polity" universe do contain a fair share of female characters, but if any of them are involved in any violent aspects of the stories, they are enhanced by cybernetics and/or the Spatterjay virus, which makes them capable of physical combat. A good example of this is in the novella, "Jenny Trapdoor".
Yes, through one plot device or another in modern sci fi women are equal fighters to guys. Sometimes they just are that way (eg, David Drakes’ military stories). Sometimes there is a tech or magic explanation. But the core rule remains: women are equal or better in every way - in stories, in every medium.
I can cite countless examples. Like the Hunger Games, the revisionist Star Trek and Lord Of The Rings stories, etc.
“…pointed to Molly’s casting, noting Gibson ‘described her many times’ in the books with pale skin, actress Briana Middleton doesn’t match that description.”
Well, duh. Failure to race-swap out at least one white character is evil racist.
Race swapping a major character is almost always a symptom of much worse rot deeper in. Also, a big budget with a committed studio is no indication of quality as Rings of Power continues to prove.
Man, why must there be a f'ing race swap in everything? What a waste of a cast for Molly. But even besides that: trailer looks like absolute garbage. It looks WAY too clean to evoke even a shred of the novels atmosphere. The whole visuals look less Cyberpunk and more thrown together by an Apple iStore interior designer (ironically fitting, I suppose). Hollywood cannot for the live of it produced anything that doesn't look polished, clean and storebought. That just doesn't work for Neuromancer. Good for Gibson if he likes what he sees and he can gush over it on Blue Sky all he wants. But for me, it just falls flat. Show me one frame in this that gives you the same feeling as staring at a sky that was the color of a television, tuned to a dead channel.
Yep. You can expect Gibson to give his blessing vehemently and often.
He's gone Woke. And, to make it clear: Neuromancer isn't Woke. It's not progressive. It's futuristic. It's a vision that Gibson gave us, and now he's sold it to the fanatics who run the industry.
He'll play along for dollars. We have another precious soul sold to the demonic ideology that runs all of media.
I’m disappointed to hear that Gibson is on Bluesky.

Example: Jerry Pournelle’s later novels.

How very uninspiring.

Looks kinda like Cyberpunk game.
