After reading "I am a Cat" and "Bottchan" and "Snow Country" and not understanding what all the fuss was about i.e. "boring"), I gave up on Japanese lit. This list has inspired me to give it another go. I enjoyed Murakami's 1Q84, tho, yes, "the lack of Christian sexual mores" did strike me as less than inspiring.
I have vivid memories of the movie of "The Makioka sisters" - beautifully photographed - in particular being baffled by why a main character was bawling his eyes out in the final scene.
I got distracted halfway thru runaway horses. Mishima is excellent though. Have read several of his other books my favorite being "Frolic of the beasts"
Will have to pick the series back up. It was really good just dense - there's basically a manifesto early on in the novel that was pretty tough to get through. Very interesting person outside of his work. Wonder where he falls in the SSH.. Seems kind of Omega to me?
Nice list, some authors I haven't heard of. Excited to find some copies. I haven't read that Murakami book either. Most recently finished the Wind/pinball novels which were great - his first novels I believe. Would recommend, they're quick reads. - edit didn't realize the Wild Sheep Chase was another book in this series. Definitely will read it.
I had no idea A Wild Sheep's Chase was the third novel of a trilogy. Clearly, I have more reading in front of me,
There’s just something about Japanese novels ❤️
Kobo Abe and Naoya Shiga

Have a book you would recommend by him?
Always enjoy starting an unknown author with their short stories.. That's how I first read murakami with "Men without women".
Thanks
