Can you imagine if instead of joke puppeting the crew, they had gotten Jim Hensen Co. to, i dont know, make a really gnarly new alien creature/ race (on, say, a Stange New World) that couldn't be performed by a human? Crazy, I know.
Trek is in a persistent vegetative state, unable to walk & talk, to do what it does best, and instead its mind has been unguided, wandering into many other realms, while only in occasional flashes of awareness remembering who it really is.
I was fooling myself for many years! Stayed around to early season 3, watched 3 seasons of Discovery. Because I love Star Trek I kept tuning in but it was gnawing at me constantly. I must say, having stopped watching this Star Dreck made me feel relieved. I will never watch any Kurtzman Trek again, accept for Picard Season 3. Not that that is perfect, but it's more about the nostalgia and the characters.
The only more or less decent (and sometimes good) Trek we got was the off-Kurtzman stuff: I agree with JDA that Prodigy is the most Trekkish series of this era; some of the Short Treks were actually great; Lower Decks was fantastic as a spoof, but if you take away the jokes, it's actually real Trek underneath; Picard s03 was done without Kurtzman's supervision, and immediately got better, even though Matalas could have really used a good chaperone; early SNW was better, as it was also during the time when Kurtzman was producing "The Man Who Fell to Earth"; Discovery also became a little better, when the final seasons were written during that same time. So yeah, as a Trekkie I'm also continuing to watch the current stuff, but I feel like a battered housewife. I haven't watched anything of SNW s04 yet, because I was on vacation and now have to work a lot, but that also has an advantage: I can binge all those stupid first five episodes, and then concentrate on the remainder, which will hopefully contain some decent Trek & pick up Pike's arc again. But generally, it's a full-blown post-postmodern catastrophe that we're dealing with: storytelling with emphasis on emotions, psyche, identity politics, superficial spectacle and those "big swings", regurgitating & remixing other films and series, anything but Trek; a studio head who never cared about Trek; modern soulless & Millennial-infested Hollywood corporate structures; a head honcho for Star Trek who's far from being a good filmmaker, let alone a true Trek fan; theater kids & drugged-out Hollywood elitists as writers, who have hijacked and gouged the once frowned upon geekdom, but don't know anything about science fiction… a recipe for total disaster, and that's exactly what we got.

The veterans have all been saying this isn’t Star Trek. The fans have been saying it isn’t Star Trek. Star Trek has been mostly dead since 2005.
