Sam Raimi is my favorite Spider-Man director also, and Spider-Man 2 was the best. But I have to concede that it is an English gentleman, Tom Holland, who has been the best actor in role - yes, even moreso than Tobey McGuire. Sam Raimi understands superheroes. If you have not already check out DARKMAN.
I'm actually a staunch anglophile myself, but I believe American heroes should be played by American actors. Also, I find Holland's Spidey to be too weak and weepy, so Tobey is my guy now and forever.
Understood. Having Superman being portrayed by a Brit was absurd - so I empathize. But Steve Ditko’s Peter Parker was also a bit of a wimp and Tom Holland definitely has that “young superhero vibe” down. I’m not sure Tobey McGuire’s Peter Parker would be as awestruck by Tony Stark/Iron Man. Tobey McGuire is closer to the John Romita Spiderman IMHO.
This is hands down the best Spiderman movie made. There's a clip on YouTube of Willem Dafoe showing up on set and sitting in front of the Doc Ock arms completely hamming it up while Molina is on the sidelines cracking up.
I felt this article and was transported back to the first time I saw the movie. I came out of the theater almost completely speechless. Five years prior I'd felt that way with the first Matrix movie.
Sure the LotR movies were amazing and had some jaw dropping scenes, but having read the books at least three or four times by then I didn't leave the theater with the same sense of being gob-smacked. A sense of wonder, yes, but not "I don't even know..." level.

Well done article.
Thank you so much, the movie really affected me given how awful superhero movies have become.
That was a fun read.
Thanx so much!
