Yep. But they will be coming for Blu-ray too. I am not sure how much longer a life span standard physical movies have.
There will always be special editions, much like they mint vinyl records these days, but physical media is going to be made obsolete, whether we like it or not. Greed and control.
After fighting off the digital scalpers and finally getting one near launch, I hardly touched my PS5. Spiderman 2 was the first and only game I put in the console, and it was a huge disappointment and Sony let DEI and Sweet Baby Inc. corrupt all their flagship studios.
With so few games worth buying it wasn't worth the price of entry.
Same for me. I remember all the hype, the (artificial) shortages, waiting lists, even special lookout apps. I was really hyped when I got mine close to launch. Looking back I've mainly played ps4 games on it and used it as a streaming box. Damn thing doesn't even have a browser. The one standout game for me this cycle was Stellar Blade, but a system seller that was not. The PS5 was almost as big a waste of money then PS VR was.

In this space [right here] I would list off several recommendations to try and help your buyer's remorse, but I've got nothing.
I've only used mine to play Silent Hill 2 for the third or fourth time, Dead Space a second time, and Baldur's Gate 3 because, no, my PC can't run anything more than a few tabs in Firefox without engaging its rocket boosters.
Could I interest you in a pair of survival horror remakes or a legendary 500 hour CRPG?
That's pretty much what PlayStation is doing here. At least with Steam, if you're patient, you can buy games for actual pocket change. In that case, a glorified rental doesn't feel like so much of a rip-off.
This is about greed and control coming from a company that has no qualms about yoinking digital content you have shelled out money for (see their recent movie library deletion). Greed to minimize Cost of Goods on the PS6 so they can reach profitability faster, and control so they can clamp down, delete, or alter your content whenever they want.
Their excuse isn't entirely wrong, people have migrated mostly to digital. That doesn't mean there's no place for physical or every single GameStop would be shutting their doors.
What I expect is that since Stop Killing Games has been neutered in the EU and the CA bill which would force a sensible end of life on games looks to be encountering too much friction to pass, companies have been emboldened to double down on their innate need to see the black line go up. The easy way to do that is to keep an iron grip on your customer base to squeeze as necessary.
As a note, a 2TB drive doesn't cost $80 any more, it's closer to $150 - $300 though the Xbox licensed drives have also increased to ~$250 USD.
These storage and RAM prices won't last forever, of course they aren't going to pass any savings on to the customer when prices inevitably come down.
Man, it's been more than two decades and I'm STILL mad that I can no longer access my $5 premium Kingdom Rush content from Ironhide. They shut that browser app down and the content's not on Steam.
I want my lightning spell and third reinforcement troop!!! The hardest difficulties were balanced around having those!!!
If that lost $5 still gets me, I can only imagine the day I go to redownload Monkey Island II Enhanced edition and it's gone. (But Jeffolas, other games will be gone too, won't their loss also upset you? Yes, but there's only one Monkey Island II Enhanced edition.)

The crazy thing about all this is that they stopped making games worth owning.
The PS5 is six years old, and I can count on one hand the new to the current gen games I have for it. Of the other games, they are all remakes/remasters, also available on PS4, should be on PS4 but aren't (like a Castlevania collection they put on Switch 1, but shafted PS4 users), or are PS4 games whose DLC only works on PS5 (Why Witcher, why?).
The rollout of good, current gen games is so pathetically slow I no longer care. Even when a once beloved franchise releases a game, it's more likely to suck than not (Borderlands!)
Meanwhile, my backlog is so extensive, I could spend 10, 15, maybe even 20 years clearing it. Hell, it's going to take me 6 months just to finish Baldur's Gate 3. After that, I'll have decades of old favorites to replay.
PS5 wasn't worth buying, with these changes PS6 isn't even a consideration.

Can get digital anywhere: Steam; Gog; Epic; some place in China...
The only ;problem with Steam is that you are buying a license to paly the game.
