Dang! I really wanted to see this 42nd installment of switch the white character with a black one. Each one being the absolute first ever and step forward to some fantasy or another.
For some of us, THE ROCKETEER, although not born in the 1930s as was THE SHADOW, THE PHANTOM, THE GREEN HORNET, and DOC SAVAGE, is still iconic thanks to four men and one woman: Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Joe Johnston and above all Dave Stevens - and Bettie Page.
Since the latter two have passed on the only people I would trust this property to would be those first three names. Especially Joe Johnston - who demonstrably proved he can do period adventure after CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.
The Disney cartoon was a joke in very poor taste and this obscene monstrosity which Oyelowo was attempting actually FITS the definition of cultural appropriation! If Oyelowo is so hellbent on playing a masked adventurer from the 1930s either he should create his own or portray one which has already been established such as HOODED JUSTICE (aka Will Reeves) from HBO's THE WATCHMEN.
Race or sex swapping an iconic character like, James Bond or James T. Kirk would be beyond appalling but The Rocketeer? Not exactly an iconic character. Not going to get worked up over that one. Might even be good.
No race and sex swaps are acceptable. Seeing those makes a movie very easy to ignore.
