Horror and Gothic Horror were originally Christian genres.

Time to take them back.

I never thought of it that way before. Thanks for this.

Perhaps this true in some alternate universe. In our world, horror films are inspirational feminist propaganda with one theme: Girls are Great. No matter how powerful the supernatural monsters or homicidal psychos, the lone girl defeats them.

In ancient times, horror films were great date films - for the same reason couples went rode roller coasters. I wonder who watches them now, and why?

I haven't watched a lot of modern horror films, but I know Brian Niemeier has talked about the idea that the girl usually wins, and it's rooted in purity, chastity, and virginity triumphing over evil and sin. Obviously, turning it into a feminist screed would be a perversion of this.

I never watched horror films, but I thought the standard plot was the girl rescued from horror by a guy.

But the critics have none of that. Their lists of the top horror films are mostly made after 2000, plus a few - as a Variety article says - whose “matriarchal premise was decades ahead of its time.” Good solid feminist fare.
