This reminds me of what I call the, 'let's dumb it down of the Americans', or alternatively, 'let's ham it up for the Americans'.
An example of the 'dumb it down', is changing the title of the first Harry Potter book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone') to 'Harry Potter and the Sorcers Stone', because the poor Americans wouldn't know what a 'philosopher's stone' is. As though they couldn't look it up in a dictionary or, heaven forfend, do an internet search if they couldn't get it by context, and the fact that it's explained in the book.
A more generic example of 'hamming it up, is the nervous tick that most directors have, (not all but most) is that if one thing hits home then if they do the same thing eleventy-nine times then it's impact will be ninety-eleventy times better.
It most assuredly ain't so.
This is the thing with the lesbians in the shows you mentioned. (I'm a lesbian so I know of what I speak) We, the viewer/reader, get that lesbians exist and have relationships, just like hetrosexuals and gay men and bisexuals, but like explosions and jokes that go on for too long and myriad other examples, don't hit us over the head with it if it doesn't advance the plot, build the characters, or provide background information.
Doing these things for your own personal and/or political gratification is lazy.
