Masters of the Universe opened to $29.3 million domestic this weekend on a $200 million budget, finishing second behind Scary Movie 6, which earned $55 million.
And that's why none of us should pay for this trash. Literally nobody has to pay for tickets to see new release movies and tv shows. There is nothing illegal about it and nobody can arrest everybody.
Could have been something. Heroic Fantasy can have mass easy appeal, no matter if you grew up with the franchise or not. But it needs those who did as a kickstarter and most of us didn't show. The reasons are twofold, I think: first thing that sunk it was the stupid toxic masculinity crap, because 80s folks are exactly the demographic that gets turned off by this the most. Second thing is the echo of Kevin Smith. Many potential viewers just didn't want to see the franchise treated like that again. Smith did so much damage...
What did they expect? Were they banking on the goodwill of those that watched the shitty ass Netflix cartoon version to come watch their shitty big screen version?
And didn’t we learn our lesson the first time when Dolph was He-Man?
Maybe, just maybe, Hollywood and TV should — gasp — make original things and stop trying to bank on nostalgia.
Dolph as He Man was very ridiculous. Agreed. Even more ridiculous? The writer who attempted to "fix it" - Stephen Tolkin. The same cretin who gave us the Italian Red Skull in the worst adaptation of Captain America ever. The only thing redeemable in that mess was Frank Langella as Skeletor.
Oddly enough, also the best part about the Captain America movie you’re mentioning. The Red Skull makeup wasn’t bad at all. It wasn’t good, just the best part of the movie.
Wow the movie based on a toy line from the 80s that nobody except Gen Xers care about bombed? That’s crazy, I thought it was gonna be the next big thing. Curse the woketards for ruining this, hopefully we have better luck with the Street Sharks reboot
Red Letter Media pointed out the obvious… most of the audience who cares is in their early 50’s/late 40’s. This means, their kids are likely adults.
The better window for generational culture transference was 10 years ago when the target audience might’ve taken their kids to see this movie. The older generation doesn’t care as much - nostalgia at best, and their kids have moved on from being interested.
The movie is said to be good, but someone like myself who would see it will wait until it arrives to streaming to rent or watch as part of the streaming package when it’s available.
I was already not going to go with the identity politics. Then they made it 2.5 hours and rated PG13. I’m not taking my son to that. Would have gladly gone if it was not political and something fun that boys would like. They failed
I saw it. Twice. It's actually pretty great. I have no tolerance for wokeness and it didn't trip my hair trigger woke meter at all. It was funny, didn't take itself seriously, wasn't preachy. My wife liked it. My 18 year old daughter liked it. My 11 year old son liked it. I think maybe Amazon just sucks at marketing theatrical releases?

As soon as they mentioned toxic masculinity, I knew this was Gay-Man and The Ass Masters of The Universe and had zero interest in ever watching it.
