Lanterns co-creator Tom King says the HBO series’ writers debated whether Sheriff Kerry Kane should face justice for murdering Hal Jordan, and that the answer they reached was no.
Seems like rule #1 is "Piss off the people you can count on being fans in the effort to "make it our own." And we'll do it by bastardizing the brand and replacing everything we don't like with things we, the group of 10 people in the writers room, do like regardless of the fitness for the IP or how actions map to established characters.
The followers and fans of the IP show their support for or against particular changes to the IP. If they don't like a storyline, the run suffers. If they do, then initial sales are high and residual value is high. When you have 50 years of data, why try to shake the jello?
When is the last time this strategy worked out over any sort of long-term effort?
This morally confused show presents a worldview that the only form of evil is for white people to be self-serving; if a person’s skin is brown, then the struggle itself is morally self-justifying even if the struggle is self-serving. Any act in service is justified - theft, dishonesty, murder, mass murder.
I didn’t watch the show but I followed it from afar I guess.
Listening to these writers, you wonder if they’ve ever read a book, an essay, a short story in their entire lives. They have so little feel for the medium of writing and characters it’s hard to believe anyone ever hired them in the first place; they describe essentially around in the dark, bumping into random ideas, absorbing them, and then vomiting them onto the page. Truly abysmal.
I felt this way watching The Boys S2+ play out.
“Now we need this character to exist because zeitgeist. What will they do? They’ll oppose this original character. Ok, X is in the news. Now this original character does Y to get X. Ok, this character doesn’t fit doing Y, we’ll just have their dad’s head get blown off so now they do Y…” ad infinitum.
Slaves of Satan explaining why they serve Satan.
Tom King really is a real life supervillain.
Kerry had Post Partum Depression, you see.
Incidentally I would be highly annoyed if they wrote power rangers and Zach was now the 'Dark Ranger' instead of the Black Ranger.

They legit dropped the evil part from the oath?
