James Gunn explained why he believes making Batman and Superman films are harder than Guardians of the Galaxy while also admitting he did not know much about the Guardians and was able to basically create a whole new version of them. This Substack is reader-supported.
Superman and Batman are harder b/c there is existing content to compare those to with whatever you produce. With GOTG only comic book die-hards had any clue who they were so Gunn could have made them to be any way he wanted and there'd be nothing to compare that against; to measure it against.
His comments sound more to me like a guy worried he's not going to be able to pull this off after all and is sewing seeds in advance to that effect to lessen the shock should things play out that way. Personally I think Gun should not be making either a superman or a batman film or another film in which the hero's aren't comical. Comedic action is something he can pull off and do it well so that's what he should stick with and contract out writing and directing of the non-comedic films to others with skills in those genre's. He can still be involved, be hands-on, just allow others to take the lead. I'm very concerned that Gunn could screw this up such that we have to wait another 1-2 decades before WB or another studio attempts another DC Hero film which is exactly what will happen if he can't pull this DC reboot off. While he's had great success with PEACEMAKER and the Monster Squad those were b/c those are comical in nature which is Guinn's thing and why his SUPERMAN film felt so off; all over the place.
Translation: it's harder to cram my idiotic ideas down your throats using a beloved character than it is to fashion an unknown hero.
Gunn take a chance and write your own heroes. Rocket was a great character.
