Fascinatng breakdown of how the audience fatigue around deconstructions is finally showing up in real-time reactions. Sarnoski's reference to those early ballads is legit, Robin was brutal in those versions, but framing it now feels tone-deaf when everyone's burned out on subversion. I worked on a small indie where we pitched hero origin story and the producers kept pushing 'what if he was actually bad tho' angle, ended up killing the whole project.
I guess it is true that Hollywood is where trends go to die. I wonder how many 100s of millions of dollars they have to lose before they turn the ship around?
Another white male who sits around brooding about his "sins." Robin Hood was a product of the age in which he lived. Of course, he (or his character) did things that we would consider barbaric today.
If this was peak-era Clint Eastwood then I would be really looking forward to it. He deconstructed the western genre in some really interesting ways resulting in some deeply good movies.
But the bar is set really high for this sort of deconstruction to end up being good and I think it would be exceptionally hard to get that sort of thing through the Hollywood system right now. So I will wait and see but not with enormous hope.
It’s looking epic
ly bad!
Predictable and boring.
