Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of Gundam GQuuuuuuX and longtime lieutenant of Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno, recently gave an interview that set off alarm bells in Japan’s animation industry.
Screw that. Give me some classic real robot mech warfare goodness with some good characters, reasonable but still fantastic mech designs, intriguing story, and PTSD inducing action.
You say that, but you're immediately forgetting that both the original MSG and Char's Counterattack are fundamentally awe-inspiring works that never truly dropped their connection with both Super Robot works of the 70s and the Science Fiction of both the Pulp Era and 60s anime. The Tatsunoko motifs are just as present in 1979 as they were in Mazinger Z.
This. I’ve been rewatching the original Gundam series and, despite the dated visuals, its combat remains intense and brutal. And the characters are definitely at the forefront of the story.
My fave show is Gundam Unicorn. As someone who only watched Gundam Wing, G Gundam, and Seed. Watching this show talk about Char’a rebellion, and other UG stuff (i think), it took me the entire Unicorn eps to finally figure out what New-Type was.
It was amazing to piece it together. I did look up the references and explanations after the fact. It only told me what I puzzles together.
I aim to make a mecha theme story that captures that same feeling. :) music by sawano is a bop!
I mean, I'd like to think that we need to gun for an era where we can have Sword and Sorcery in Space with our conquering Barbarian Hero having a Metal Titan as he builds his legacy and empire.
I like Gquuuux, but the elements that made me like it are also why I agree with you, Brian.
The Gundam Pastiche Skinner box needs to be discarded in favor of a bigger Creative Space for new mecha stories. One thing that I like about The Messenger is that it does not shy away from moments of awe and heroism despite maintaining that breakneck pace of action and behind the scenes machinations present in both Gundam and Mass Effect. Kudos to JN Chaney and Terry Maggert there. I also love that he isn't afraid of letting Dash follow the Adventuror/Conqueror/King sequence that was present in older fiction and is only present in a neutered form in certain Isekai these days.

My entry into Gundam was Wing. Great series.
My one criticism, is that due to the culture, they inevitably become some nonsensical version of freemason dogma a la "prometheus rising."
NEED to fix the culture first!
