I dont think anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together ever thought there was such a thing as a meaningful GTA VI boycott. I mean even if a million people don't "buy" it, that wouldnt even register to Rockstar. People who really think anything grand was afoot need to get out of their bubble. I dont even think if Cyberleek would publish the whole thing it'd make a super significant dent. The GTA VI audience is just too normie focused.
And besides, a vast majority of people have just given in to the narrative of convenience anyway. Especially younger audience who dont even think about things like how cool it'd be to play the game they loved in their youth with their kids some day or some such. Attachment to physical things is just gone, and people have been told that that is always a good thing and makes you free by too many voices. Hardly anyone realizes that the things you own can become physical embodiments of memories that you can keep and share. Everything has just become too transient. Like a generation of people how take a thousand pictures with their cell phone every day, just to never look at them ever again.
Gamers will eat up whatever companies like Sony throw at them. It's irrelevant to me, I'm out. I have a catalog of old games to play that will last me until I die.
If hundreds of millions of preorders were registered, that means hundreds of millions of gamers are willing to eat out of the toilet.
I'm not one.
But that speaks to a lost cause for gaming in general. Developers will continue to push greater and grosser toilet offerings because the Idiocracy will slurp it up and demand second helpings.
The problem isn't hundreds of thousands of angry gamers being hypocrites. I'd argue that they are, in fact sincere, or enough of a majority of them are sincere that the "say one thing, do something different" crowd are functionally a rounding error.
The problem is hundreds of millions of normie, Madden-loving, Call of Duty playing, FIFA spending, Fortnite addicted "franchise players" who can't wait to fork over $100 for GTA VI because THAT'S WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS PLAYING.
They are not "gamers." Gamers play hundreds of games across dozens of game genres, always looking for something new and exciting to play, chasing experiences like bringing down an ancient, towering behemoth in Shadow of the Collosus, finally figuring out how Gwent works in Witcher 3, feeling actual betrayal when the Council dismisses your warnings of the Reaper threat in Mass Effect (after you saved their sorry a--es), landing a 10% hit in XCOM but missing a 90%, beating a man to death with a golf club because someone asked you nicely and realizing you've been a puppet this whole time in Bioshock, learning YOU are the bad guy in KOTOR.
The list goes on.
Franchise players play tens of games across ones of genres: 1st person shooters, 3rd person shooters, MMORPG, MOBA, Arena Fighters, and Sports, with a bunch of Koreans playing RTS, but only like 2 or 3 of those.
They don't chase new experiences. They chase more of the same, old stale franchises and what everybody else is having.
There's hundreds of millions of them and they dictate what goes on for the rest of us.
Gamer boycotts mean nothing because they're being outspent by an order of magnitude. Rockstar makes billions annually on shark cards while EA can sell annual roster updates for sports games and make billions on in game purchases that are worthless when the next annual instalment releases. These people are the reason the rest of us get screwed --they can't close their wallets even when a company is hovering out every red cent.
A boycott?
It's like trying to slow down a train when morons keep shoveling coal into the boiler and some other moron cut the brakes.
Forget it.
And to be clear, GTA VI is not a new experience, no matter what stupid things Rockstar throws in, like having to buy gas, all of those systems are window dressing on a nearly thirty year old formula of mission based, urban gang-banging and thug life.
I'll pass.
But there's precious few like me, and that's the problem.
