For those who want a more specific definition, let’s refer to Grift as “Culture War Grift.” This is a grift that is commonly referred to but nobody has a concrete understanding of.
Metroid has never been about female empowerment (except for Other M, which is viewed similarly by fans as Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull). Super Metroid, Metroid Prime 1, and Metroid Dread all had peak writing in the austere style of metroidvanias.
Super Metroid was certainly a female narrative, but it had nothing to do with "empowerment." It was a battle between the devouring mother of Mother Brain and the good mother Samus who sets the world right for her imprinted "child," the last metroid who ironically imprinted on her after she wiped out the rest of its entire race in a previous game.
The story of this last little metroid who reversed its own vampiric nature and died to save its good mother Samus from its evil mother Mother Brain, is a classical tragedy. Samus' immediate revenge for the last metroid's death and her harried escape (including the rescue of a small alien family) were some of the most satisfying gameplay I've ever experienced in gaming. Deeply memorable.
Metroid Prime 1 broadened the ancient Chozo civilization and established Samus as a foundling prophesied to save the galaxy from a great evil that the Chozo themselves could not overcome.
Metroid Dread explored the conflict between Samus' two Chozo teachers: one good and one evil.
Super Metroid is the cleanest narrative of the three, but they all stand on literary merit and not as banal power fantasies.
I was not expecting this Article to branch of into AI but I will admit the transition from the original point to AI was organic and didn't feel like it came out of left field
As for your point on AI,it is indeed true that AI will just become another tool to be used and become mundane,no different from Cars,Cellphones or anything, but the moral panic around AI seems to have impacted the art scene the most, where now artists with no talent that aren't skilled enough to carve out a niche can rely on AI as a scapegoat solely under the basis of their art having soul, the bar for good artist has been significantly lowered under the guise of AI not having a Soul, but the truth is AI is to artist what natural selection is animals, the lesser capable and mediocre are ought to be condemned and only the extraordinary ought to succeed
To finish off my point I must also congratulate the usage of God as a moral compass, even inspite of my agnostic views, while many attempt to say man doesn't require God while simultaneously praising and following whatever authority higher and holding their words as gospel, proving man does in deed require God to be made whole.
Dont fear AI but hard copies of the bible and some other books will be a must.
Well put, Egad. An objective standard is necessary for discernment.
