The Odyssey.

Animal Farm.

Wuthering Heights.

Lord of the Rings

Narnia

The same thing is being done to them that happened to major blockbuster franchises and the Disney animated catalogue with all of the remakes.

It's not "replacement," or even "cultural vandalism.". It's invalidation and ignominy.

"Animal Farm?" asks the millennial/Gen Z too ignorant to know they're ignorant, "you mean that dumb movie with the farting pigs? It wasn't very good, but it sure roasted capitalism!"

The point is to conflate these cultural artifacts with subpar slop so that they can wipe out years, decades, centuries, or even millennia of Western thought and influence.

It's sick and depraved and meant to belittle humanity rather than uplift it.

Agreed. This is all part of the plan. Destroy that which is significant and replace it with garbage.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

My Greek wife would beg to differ, Acorn. Three points on a graph constitutes a trend, after all.

"It's not replacement". I've 30 years, i am a native italian, and i have seen, in the arc of my life, my country been 99% italian-native european to be a multiethinic hellhole full of non europeans who want to kill us and displace us. Stop pretending this in not happpening.

Jeffolas's avatar

Hey, I'm on your side. I think there's a misunderstanding.

"It's not a replacement" is talking about new media versus old media, in this case, a book, not populations.

This version of "The Odyssey" isn't meant to replace Homer's. It will never, EVER be good enough for that.

Instead, it's meant to destroy Homer's Odyssey because, for some people, who will never, EVER, read the book, it will be the only Odyssey they ever know. They will never understand just what a critical and influential work it is because all they ever saw was a dumbass, half-ass, piece of crap movie.

Figli di Romolo's avatar

Now I understand what you mean. Yes, I agree with you, but iconographically replacing figures from our own culture with members of other foreign peoples is still a form of ethnic cleansing.

Jeffolas's avatar

That is true.

I didn't go into detail on the symbolism of the casting, but it's happening all over and worth pointing out.

And these people, occultists, demon worshippers, and self-proclaimed artists too stupid to differentiate "edgy" from "evil," are really, really into symbolism.

They want to replace white Christians with an ignorant and more easily ruled population too addicted to hand-outs to see the chains attached to them.

Christopher Nolan had some major hits and I absolutely loved his earlier movies. But I won’t be watching this one. I didn’t watch Tenet either.

She would also have been a good choice.

“Athena in a $250 million epic based on the foundational text of Western literature is not a role that requires Zendaya. It requires an actor who can embody the ancient, cold intelligence of a war goddess who has watched civilizations rise and fall.” by this standard Zendaya’s work in Challengers and Dune ll show her to be the perfect choice for the role

Nick Borodinov's avatar

I liked Zendaya in Dune, but I’d say she’s more situationally angry than this “cold intelligence of the war” thing.

That’s be Lena Headey

Shiva Seetahal's avatar

Agree. Tenet was unwatchable and none of my Nolan fan friends enjoyed it but neither would they admit to it

Reformed_Warrior46's avatar

Seeing and hearing more about this adaptation makes me want to re-read the original work again instead of watching this.

Ma'at Kheru's avatar

the original has Africans OP doesnt know what hes talking about

Greg's avatar

Race-baiting and gender-baiting! Achilles was ½ divine, Athena wholely; not Greek. Can’t wait to see those actors in those roles.

King Cavan's avatar

Greek Gods wouldn't look like Africans but like Greeks.

Figli di Romolo's avatar

“Oh, he’s just a fictional character”: that’s an old excuse that no longer holds, since you only use that nonsense when it comes to European peoples.

Watch anything from Broken Blossoms and The Good Earth to the Prince of Persia or A Mighty Heart — then put on your big boy pants and make an appointment with your psychiatrist.

It also proves Christopher Nolan got in way over his own head. And is now resorting to DEI restrictions, and blindly trusting Emily Wilson’s bastardized version of Homer, without any question.

We read Wilson's preface to her translation and then stopped. What nonsense -- aimed at woke school districts. But hey, Wilson needs her books to sell.

And may I please remind everyone that Homer specifically describes Helen with this epithet:

"Of the white arms."

White arms.

I just don’t get the Zendaya push at all.

Instagram followers.

She has lots.

Hollowood thinks that equals instant appeal.

Hollowood is stupid.

John's avatar

I just don’t find her very attractive. Not saying she’s unattractive but… 🤷‍♂️

Man of the Atom's avatar

She's a mediocre actress. That is the real issue.

It is a humiliation ritual. Do not partake of the slop.

> Nolan told Stephen Colbert: “It’s really for people who haven’t read it and don’t know anything about it.”

Seems correct. People who have read it are likely to hate what he's done with it.

Kristen Parker's avatar

If true, I hate what they’re doing to this movie. However, they would not even try this if weren’t for the fact that we no longer read or study this literature, anymore. To most Americans, this will look like an adventure story with popular actors. They won’t understand that it is a foundational document. It deserves so much more.

Waylon Graves's avatar

It’s not a problem because I’m not going to watch it.

Lots of upcoming movies I won't be seeing. Normally I wish people well, hope they make a lot of money from their projects that don't interest me - but there is something borderline vile about his refusal to employ (as far as I can see) ANY Greek actors. This is the essential Greek tale. It is a deliberate erasure of Greek culture and a belittling of the Western civilization which is based upon it - "devotion to an accurate retelling doesn't matter; it's just a fighting/f**king fantasy." No, it's not. I hope they lose a whole lot of money. I hope people think twice before rewarding this disrespect with their attention and their money.

B.'s avatar

As the grandchild of Greek immigrants, nurtured on ancient Greek myths and epics, I really appreciate this comment.

It does feel to me like an erasure. But that's what "Hamilton" is too.

sleepdeprived_bear's avatar

A few things I can think of. Nolan took the ticket and was allowed to do great work, but now has to pay back with compound interest so awful that even though the Hapsburgs once allegedly had control of all known gold mines and still went bankrupt, Nolan recently took the ticket, or he's being duped.

In my opinion we're going to see the beginning of the end of his career and I don't think he'll bounce back from this.

What a nasty little line narrowing down and dismissing Zendaya’s work to only a tennis romance movie.

She is an Emmy award winner and an acting powerhouse. Read any reviews on Euphoria and how utterly transfixing her performance is.

Lots of dog whistles in the comments, too. Gross.

King Cavan's avatar

Zendaya is, to be kind, a plain-looking, masculine woman with minimal acting skills. Awards are decided on the basis of the racial & gender bigotries of the overtly anti-white, anti-male institutions of the bourgeoisie & their corporate overlords. These awards are routinely sneered & laughed at by the general public, who know exactly why certain actors or directors are chosen.

Hollywood's artistic & commercial heyday is over, it's bigotry has placed it, alongside the music industry, in the cultural casualty ward created by progressivism's bigotry & disregard for talent.

corinne myers's avatar

Zendaya is a 129 pound WOMAN with tiny wrists and a collar bone as delicate as fine china.

If you find that masculine, it is only because you’re coming from your own fat pussy baseline of manhood, you chud.

Cyborgjustice's avatar

You’re the gross one, since you’re defending her. She can’t act, you freak of nature.

Michael Scheske's avatar

I’m not saying we need to DNA test for Greek actors. All I’m asking is that they don’t cast actors that constantly remind my eyes that they are actors and not, in fact, the actual characters. Just give me some reason to suspend my disbelief and help me pretend I’m not just watching a bunch of millionaires play dress-up

I guess that’s too much to ask modern Hollywood

ScaryLarryPants's avatar

Jiminy Christmas, was Greek-stereotype actress Nia Vardalos too busy with her 4th or 9th installment of "My Big Fat Greek Cash Cow" to be called up for a pinch-hitting role?

Andrew Mackay's avatar

The blatant cash-grab of My Big Fat Wedding 3 did more damage to the My Big Fat Greek Wedding legacy than Nolan's film has a chance of doing to Homer.

B.'s avatar

The first one I found very funny. I passed on the follow-ups.
