I’m of two minds on this particular project. If they make it just an action/adventure story with no canonical impact; basically just a hunt with fighting lore accurate enemies in lesser explored but accurately portrayed areas I’ll be okay with it.

It is just a paragraph after all and one where only the result mattered to Tolkien. This could be a good example of developing a story within Tolkien’s universe that doesn’t try and change that very universe.

If on the other hand if it’s an abomination and complete bastardization like Rings of Power that literally changes everything Tolkien wrote then f’ them all.

I'll guarantee that it's going to be trash, just like the Lesbohirrim garbage.

Seems obvious they are adding to the LOTR universe so they can push views that Tolkien wouldn't agree with. Next they'll release a version of 1984 where Big Brother is the protagonist.

This whole project just reeks from top to bottom. If the dreadful (and artificially stretched) Hobbit trilogy wasn’t lesson enough, this God-forsaken Gollum project now proves Peter Jackson’s actual disdain for Tolkien’s work beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Although not as blatant as Amazon's sludge, HUNT FOR GOLLUM is still just a nostalgia-driven cash grab--and it only encourages Colbert's unnecessary follow-up movie set during the middle of FELLOWSHIP...

I have no problem with casting Taylor-Joy as an elf. But even apart from the fact that it is a non canon character, the brief description alone carries the heavy scent of girl boss. Also, judging by Hollywood being Hollywood, they will likely give her a role and actions that somehow make the heroics of the original fellowship even possible in the first place (like Rogue One did for Star Wars), up with which I cannot put.

If she really wanted to play an elf, she could have waited for live action Frieren.

Who cares? I haven't watched any of this trash since the original Lord of the Rings. They've already run it to death.

Is her character Eyesintwozipcodesolas?

I bet she’ll do a good job, I hope the character is well-written. She certainly is elvish-looking.

She won't and it won't.

"Walsh and Boyens are back on this one, and they understand the material as well as anyone."

They both trash hacks and everything wrong with the films, and the problems are legion, is down to these tow.

It remains true that women ruin everything.

ATJ is probably half Nordic alien. Perfect actress to play an Elf. She’d make an excellent Idril, an excellent Galadriel. With red hair she would make an excellent Nerdanel.

But we won’t be getting any of that any time soon.

The biggest problem with the hunt for Gollum alongside the Peter Jackson films is that it highlights some rather unfortunate problems and inconsistencies in Tolkien's original text.

I know, I know, it's blasphemy.

The original sin, so to speak, was Tolkien retroactively deciding to make the ring in the Hobbit into a world altering mcguffin for his next book. He even had to go back and make some changes to the Hobbit itself to better accommodate that

Gollum had the ring for hundreds of years, using it constantly. Bilbo had it for decades, using it fairly often himself, for trivial things like avoiding dislike relatives. He even used multiple times strolling through Mirkwood in close proximity to Sauron himself as the Necromancer. Sauron had no sense of it, and the ring only made one single effort to get back to its master. It 100% should have betrayed Bilbo as it had betrayed Isildur and Gollum before. It could have slipped off his finger when he was taunting the spiders at the earliest, or at the Battle of Five Armies at the very latest

Then Frodo got the ring and sat on it for years. Gandalf, who had some suspicions, had decades to do something, but didn't until it became an emergency.

Gollum, who had to be about the worst tracker in the history of trackers, couldn't find the Shire and Baggins and wandered absolutely everywhere but where he needed to go. Despite his aimless wanderings, an elite ranger and wizard together couldn't find him.

And then, when the enemy captured Gollum, they couldn't read a map apparently, or ask directions, and had no idea where to go. This despite the Shire being reasonably close enough to the Witch King's old stomping grounds, even a few rumors should have been enough to figure out where to go.

I know, it's a brief and incomplete, and probably not 100% accurate recounting, but the overall point is that those areas of LOTR are very weak logically. Tolkien explained some things after a fashion, handwaved other things away (a paragraph in an appendix) and otherwise moved on. Peter Jackson's movies, while excellent, didn't even attempt those minor efforts, and even changed certain things entirely (like Frodo having the ring for considerably less time) so those inconsistencies are made worse if you pick up the rock they're hiding under and make a whole dang film about a very nebulous time and sequence of events.

Cast her as Luthien, sure. But not this invented nonsense.
