This is so spot on. I was literally thinking about this when Amazon implied the same sort of path for the upcoming film. I don't want scrub Bond. I want the Bond that jumps off the dam in the opening of Goldeneye.

Bond is all about the power fantasy.

Something IO Interactive never understood.

It's uber woke. What did they expect?

Yorch Torch Games's avatar

IO Interactive doesn't understand Bond.

And it shows.

I’ll be there but not on record.

Pc we have Hypervisor now

Shoving the non-Bond characters in front like we should care about them more is very annoying. Especially when they're obvious DEI choices; I'll also assume they will be girl-bosses that don't like dudes.

Also, no one cares about influencers in their games.

Yeah - this is new, and puzzling. Is there a story here? Who did they think was like “I can’t wait to see ‘Noobypezdispenser’ or whoever make a cameo appearance in my Bond escapism game”?

Spot on. I was one of those who grew up watching James Bond films with my father—all of them. An origin story for Bond is not interesting at all to me.

IO Interactive's never understood the Bond audience. Terrible mistake.

Glad you have fond family memories watching Bond.

Excellent article and top notch analysis. What resonated the most was how you contrasted stories with an origin story that work, say Luke Skywalker and Neo, where their journey matters, versus James Bond who's already completed that journey and fans just want to see him navigate, solve, and survive situations where the deck is stacked against him through his skill, wits, and luck.

Io Interactive is a great developer and I hope they survive in case game sales are enough. I'm going to do something the shills and emotionally driven gamers refuse to do, math. Io Interactive's CEO said the game's budget is about $200,000,000. Let's be generous and say Io Interactive doesn't have to be on the hook for marketing costs and can collect all of the cost of the game so the platform doesn't collect a fee.

200,000,000/70 is about 2,857,143 copies. That's almost 3 million copies at full price. While the last James Bond film, "No Time to Die" which I didn't like because the point of a James Bond film is an improbable and thrilling survival of the titular character (apologies to folks that can figure out the ending so spoilers) did financially well and assuming $15 a film ticket meaning way more than 3 million people. Given your initial analysis on Twitter by checking out the SteamDB charts, I don't think they're going to make it.

Maybe Io Interactive will be like Remedy Entertainment announcing Alan Woke, I mean Wake, 2 profitable after 1.5 years after launch. Who knows, but we both know an eye watering amount of money was spent on marketing. As an Xbox gamer I laughed when the Xbox Anywhere version of First Light came with a $10 rebate after playing ten minutes.

Time will tell and I believe you will be vindicated, but your detractors in my opinion don't have the courage and integrity to admit being wrong. Keep on crushing and telling things the way you see them. It's valuable and white pilling to me.

Amazing reply and great Math analysis, Bear.

Thanks.

Respect.

An excellent in depth look.

I'm curious what part Woke plays in the results, though. Are players aware of the subtle messaging? Is the constant undermining and bad faith affecting sales?

Yorch Torch Games's avatar

Yes, it does. Players are becoming more aware of progressive undertones. Call it reverse woke.

There are plenty of amazing Bond games from previous generations where Bond is Bond; why would I need this? My friend told me, ever since the first trailer arrived, that this was James Bond Jr.

Excellent article with relevant facts to backup, that most cannot argue with.

You are 100% on the money about the origin path vs established character!!

My opinion for what its worth is IO could of used the 001-006 established (but unknown) secret agent character and created a story of them/you becoming 007 with a skill set already learned.

Thank you so much for creating a very interesting, factual article that shows no fear to tell it how it is!!

The game is great fun and wears its license lightly I felt

How did I miss this brilliant article when it first came out? (Bashes head against wall.) At any rate, this nails it. The only thing I would add is that the casting is actually worse than a DEI checklist. It actually creates the impression that the British Empire (or what's left of it) has been taken over by its former colonials, which turns it into a humiliation ritual. And the only role left for a white male Briton in today's UK is to be an expendable thug risking his life for his non-white superiors.
