1-Work backwards. Crowds come out of communities that have common interests and the relationships that are developed through repeated interaction. So interact often with people who have common interests or more importantly buy books like the one you're writing. Always dropping hints that you're creating a book and when the time comes don't be shy about asking them to back your book.
OR 2-Bring enough (meaning frequency and/or depth) value, whether through entertainment (bombastic) and/or insight (reviews or processes) on platforms where your potential customers spend time. Encourage them to like and subscribe, thus building a crowd who wants to support YOU or at the very least curious enough to support ONE of your crowd funders. Then, when you're gearing up for your campaign, continue to drop hints, reminding them when it starts.
These two options require you to understand who your customer is and what motivates them to spend money.
Okay, so how do you crowd-fund when you don't have a crowd?
2 options IMHO.

No.
As an indie author, this is both daunting and hopeful. Thanks for the article. Much to think about.
Fake and gay.
