Worldcon shows it’s increasingly more concerned about real world politics than about science fiction as members complain about lack of mentions of politics in the Seattle 2025 World Science Fiction Convention Newsletter and Washington DC drops its bid to host a future convention.
"...it has become clear that the current political situation in the United States would significantly reduce the willingness of fans from outside the United States to participate..."
What is the current political situation in America that causes nerds and dorks from around the world to not travel here? Come on SciFi convention folks, explain! This is so stupid and juvenile.
This is why I don’t go to conventions. I only attended the Portland PDX convention at the Holiday Inn in Portland, across from the PDX airport. This was right before Star Trek Generations was about to come out, or just came out, I can’t remember. I couldn't attend the event of meet and greet I couldn’t participate in because it was 60 or 70 dollars in 1994. The vendor's area was free. The cool thing was that they left the area where Micheal Dorn was the special guest, and he was talking about his time on the Next Generation and about Generations. So I could see him and hear him, but I couldn’t go to the fan event. He was the only celebrity I had ever seen coming to Portland, Oregon. Besides that, the Portland metro area now has conventions all over the place and has grown. My brother-in-law worked for a Star Wars event that happened, I think it was called Rose Con, at the Convention Center there. He was part of the local 501st chapter, and it was doing very well. He met many Star Wars actors until he revealed he was a Trump supporter, and they ostracized him from the group. In my writing groups, I recently left because I was uncomfortable with the fact that I was a Trump supporter and they weren’t, so I went and couldn’t be happier with that. I feel bad for my brother in law he worked his fingers to the bones working on costumes and such
"At its meeting on March 9, the Baltimore Washington Area Worldcon Association (BWAWA) decided to end its bid to host the 2026 SMOFcon."
To which one can only respond: BWAWA-HAHAHHAHAHAAAHH! BWAWA-HAH-HAHAHAHA!
I really don't care about any of this shit anymore. I'll stick to the old things that I've always loved.
Hopefully it's held on a desert island and those attending would never return.

They can't consider what a God-Emperor Con in DC might do for stories and attendance?
Perhaps they need a Smurfcon instead of SMOFcon.
