This is an outrage! Bloody hell, how can they do this?! They're clearly targeting pauvre Raconteur Press! Miserable connards!
Ok, we must start our own conventions, with our own contests and exclude leftists and globalists. No more Dragon-Con. We need to start talking with people who know how to organize these things or putting our resources together for such things.
If they do not have it explicitly forbidden in the rules, it should be allowed, period. They can change the rules for the next competition, not in the middle of this one—when has that ever been fair?
Crawtrapman here. This is pure BS. Cedar uses ai yes. Never mqde a secret of it. Looking at some of the other covers i highly suspect ai help. But Cedar is a conservative and we know we are 2nd class citizens to some of the people at dragoncon.
Photoshop, CorelDRAW, GIMP, Clip Studio Pro, ProCreate, and a host of other digital tools need to be banned, since AI is a digital tool as well as these.
Standard analog tools need to be provided to all artists...oh, wait. Brushes and pens are tools as well.
Finger paints shall be provided to all ... oh, wait. Fingers. Tools.
Hmm.
. . .
Blather aside, shooting from the hip without regard to the written rules which everyone operated under for this cycle is wrong. Dragon*Con should have seen that and instituted a "No AI" policy for 2025. Unfortunately, I think it's way too late to worry about the Dragon Awards. Been dead for a while.
And awards will be converged over time, because real creators don't want to administer this stuff.
Awards shows mean power, and power draws the converged flies.
It really isn't true that only bad artists dislike AI. Given that the award category is for cover art, it seems appropriate to not allow covers created by AI. Allowing the use of AI in the creation of covers etc. in an artwork competition is more likely to advantage bad artists than good - good artists don't need AI and can take it or leave it, poor ones would use it to cover up their meager skills. All that said, if a ban on AI creations is not applied universally to all entries, then obviously it is unfair to apply it only to some.
I pay almost zero attention to these things. From what I understand this is voted on by the fans. If I am correct just note that the image is partially AI generated and LEAVE IT TO US to decide. Anyone who is not a complete asshole decides what is good based on if the thing in question is GOOD or not. If they are mid-artists with sore ass from being owned by guided AI art maybe they should practice more and run con-contests less.
It shouldn't have been removed. Period. I refuses to vote the entire category and sent email to DC that my choice would have been Ms. Sanderson. In future, I hope if they are going to change the rules they do it at the beginning and not remove someone the day before voting. It sends all the wrong messages and disrespects both the artists, authors, publishers and fans. If they wanted an cover without AI, then they should have split it into two categories, it would have been easy to do.

Thank you very much for your reporting on this.

Agreed.

Awards delenda est.

The DC kids are struggling to remain relevant in a world that is passing them by. Sadly, or not, I just don’t care about them anymore.
Worst Option: Whatever this is.
Less Worse but Still Bad: review all covers remove all covers from consideration that show signs of AI use.
Best Option: Reinstate the Goblin Market cover submission as it did not violate any rules. Rewrite the rules for next year if you want to.
