It's a money-laundering operation at this point. How about an audit?

Scott - You may be on to something and I'm being serious. That would absolutely explain why Amazon keeps pissing away such huge sums of money. Its not as if entities have not already been using legitimate businesses to launder money . The mob usd to acquire many legitimate businesses , especially those that were cash heavy operations like parking garages, laundry mats, anything that's coin operated. In these kinds of businesses it is so easy to insert money that has to be washed. Amazon may just have found a way to take this to the next level so instead of laundering thousands to millions it's hundreds of millions to maybe even a billion.

What I can tell you is that we the public can't see how their spending is done, where what goes; only vey high level info. Amazon, like other major media companies and streaming services, treats specific production budgets, cost breakdowns, and internal financial metrics as confidential, proprietary business information. It's possible a good chunk of that money is ending up in the hands of shady entities.

A rumor I was unable to verify says that Amazon must pay an exit fee of 20 million per unfinished season to the Tolkien estate if they back out.

I've read that too, but that cannot be it. Amazon has sunk more than a billion into this farce; the reputational damage alone is way more than 20 million per season - let alone the actual production costs.

The 20 million fee is accurate but if one were looking at this rationally and asking what's the less costly of 2 paths; opting out with the 20 million fee per remaining seasons or pressing onward or spending up to a billion to complete all 5 seasons? Its clear which of the 2 is the smarter option so why then would Amazon press on when its clear that ROP is a flop? Scotts idea of a money laundering operation would certainly explain why Amazon has no chosen the les costly of these 2 paths.

What those two talentless hacks have managed to do to Tolkien's work is kind of impressive in its own warped and twisted way.

It's like they graduated magna cum laude from the Pigs Breakfast University of Swineville and have now managed to overshadow their former faculty masters.

Who is still funding this garbage?? Also, some trivia - the awesome prog rock band Marillion took their name from the Silmarillion. Check out tracks from either vocalist - Fish or Steve Hogarth. Both iterations produced some absolute musical magic.
