The brutal nature of the traps has to be earned by the victim, or it comes off as cruel and uncomfortable like in one of the sequels where a married couple is absolutely tortured when all they're trying to do is rightfully recover their stolen property.
In order for this to work, Kevin has to have done something really bad, like divorce mom. It would be tricky because it has to be bad enough the audience will laugh at his suffering, but not so bad that they hate him and he becomes irredeemable or gets an unsatisfying resolution/forgiveness.
But what? Cheating and beating are too harsh. A "misunderstanding" isn't harsh enough. Dead mom trauma is also a little dark for this genre.
Maybe Kevin's a deadbeat? Kid's home alone somehow and the ONLY one who can get to him (reasons) is actually Kevin and mom reaches out for help, but kid is having none of it?
Maybe the kid's a runaway? And they're in an abandoned/empty house like in 2? Maybe the kid did something stupid, and that's why they don't want to get the cops involved?
Not bad. I'll watch it.
You know what? I like it, and I'd watch it.
I'd watch this!!

Nope, sounds awful. Won’t work.
