Throughout the Old Testament, God's judgement often came through simply letting Israel go when they pulled away from Him, which would expose them to defeat by their enemies. The old generation that had turned away from God would discover that they were not great by their own doing after all. The next generation would turn back to the God above all other gods that their parents had rejected, and He would lift them up again.
