Jennifer Lawrence claimed during a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival where she is promoting her film Die My Live that “freedom of speech and freedom of expression is under attack.”
Lawrence was asked, “You’re a producer of this film. To produce a film is to produce culture, to give an opinion, to be in the public debate. The public debate in your country this week was quite threatened due to the freedom of expression. What opinion do you have upon this threat which is hovering upon opinion creators in the U.S.?”
She replied, “It’s true. Our freedom of speech, our freedom of expression is under attack.”
“And I think that the world of cinema and using your voice in artistic ways, for us to have a festival like this where we can see each other’s stories and connect and learn from each other and more importantly realize that we are all connected, and we all matter, and deserve empathy and freedom,” she added.
It’s likely that the journalist from Spain was referring to ABC pulling Jimmy Kimmel for less than a week and then reinstating while media outlets and activist organizations like the ACLU attempted to paint him as a speech free martyr when he objectively lied about the assassin who killed Charlie Kirk.
This is not an attack on free speech or free expression given lying is the opposite of free speech. Building on the thought of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, Dr. Edward Feser provides a succinct definition of free speech, “The right to freedom of speech is, more precisely, the right to speak the truth and to uphold the good. This clearly entails some limits on the right to free speech. There can be no right under natural law to speak lies or to promote evil, since that would be directly contrary to the end for which the right to free speech exists.”
However, there was an attack on free speech and free expression that was uncovered this week. YouTube admitted it bowed to pressure by the Biden administration and deplatformed multiple people due to their videos about COVID-19 and election integrity.
In a letter sent to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, the company said, “Senior Biden Administration officials, including White House officials, conducted repeated and sustained outreach to Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and pressed the Company regarding certain user-generated content related to the COVID-19 pandemic that did not violate its policies. While the Company continued to develop and enforce its policies independently, Biden Administration officials continue to press the Company to remove non-violative user-generated content.”
The company also added that “the Administration’s officials, including President Biden, created a political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms based on their concerns regarding misinformation.”
Furthermore, it stated, “It is unacceptable and wrong when any government, including the Biden Administration, attempts to dictate how the Company moderates content, and the Company has consistently fought against those efforts on First Amendment grounds.”
On top of this admission, YouTube then admitted it seemingly acted to censor people due to those pressures, “The Company terminated channels for repeatedly violating its Community Guidelines on elections integrity content through 2023 and COVID-19 content through 2024.”
So, while the suppression and suspension of Jimmy Kimmel was not an attack on free speech and free expression, YouTube’s suppression of multiple creators was. Additionally, the assassination of Charlie Kirk due to his speech was also an attack.
There is an attack on free speech and free expression happening, but it is not the one the media would lead you to believe.
