Ark Press is a science fiction and fantasy-focused publishing company that just launched with the announcement of picking up Larry Correia, but the implication is much bigger than many genre book fans may have realized, as the company is backed by Donald Trump advisor Peter Thiel and his investment group, putting a big target on the back of Toni Weisskopf’s Baen Books.
You keep saying Sanderson is bowing to woke pressure for fear of being cancelled. I can't believe that he is afraid of being canceled by his publisher, at least. In the last couple of years, he's raised over $41 million on one kickstarter, another $23 million on a backerkit, and another $14 million on an RPG on kickstarter. Sure, sure, he's not pocketing every penny of that himself, but he's clearly immune to being canceled by his publisher.
Whether he's immune to being canceled by his fans remains to be seen. But I doubt he's buckling to any pressure. He's saying this stuff because for whatever reason he believes it. Maybe he's always been a leftie. Maybe he's got a ball-breaker feminist wife, or a sexually confused teenaged daughter, and he's too beta to tell them to knock it off, so he's trying to be supportive. Maybe he runs in too many artsy-fartsy social circles. Whatever the reason, it doesn't make sense to think that he's buckling to pressure. If he's going woke, it's because he's legitimately woke.
It's probably just that he wants a quiet life.- that plus, the sensitivity readers. He strikes me as low information. Being for gay marriage sounds like someone who is completely oblivious to where the real battle lines are drawn- all-consuming empathy with crowd-sourced totalitarianism vs. reality and fans who just want people to stop infecting their favourite lore with preachy horseshit.
The potential to upend the stranglehold of publishing is there, if they know how to move. hiring larry is a good first step. Question is what will they follow up with?
That's amazing. It was harder to find new books or announcements from Baen, but this makes some things clearer. I hope Ark Press brings in more younger talent and helps them to ramp up, so good writers in their 20s and 30s can take hold and supplement or succeed today's big names.
Good to know what this fucking fascist piece of shit is doing to spread his filth. Also sad to see people gauging their reading material on the political views of the writers while simultaneously complaining about the supposed cancer of woke creating political orthodoxy. If you're afraid of what you call woke, you are simply a coward and a fool, not a courageous warrior of free speech,
By poaching Leisure Suit Larry from Baen, Thiel shows he is not book people. If he really wanted to capture the energy in the room, he would have gone for Wargate.
All his fiction is perfectly competent and good. Even I bought it new in HC, before I stopped buying thanks to his attacks on my frens. But I'm OLD. The entire Baen customer base is.
One might propose that Baen has enough of a stable to remain stable, and has always been a bit limited in how many books it can turn out due to printer limits.
Thiel is a technocrat of the highest order and an absolutely dangerous individual. He does not support any sort of freedom. His moves are all designed to gain control of whatever industry he's involved with and co-opt it for nefarious purposes.
Baen Books were my entry to good scifi and fantasy, devouring their back catalog in the last decade. Unfortunate, where things stand right now.
Same

Death to DEI.

Theil is a gay oligarch but if he publishes white dudes again, maybe we can get along.

I love Larry. His Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series is brilliant.

Good news indeed! So tiring always to see trannies and gay people spouting Marxism in sci-fi these days.
While those might mostly be solid moves, hiring Tony Daniel is the one flub. His main talent seems to be failing upwards.
One might propose that Baen has enough of a stable to remain stable, and has always been a bit limited in how many books it can turn out due to printer limits.
Baen also has a very active ebook site. With a large back catalog, going back decades.
Does Ark Press have a website set up?
ark.press
More competition is better, in my opinion. It would be awful to see Baen Books leave the space, but there should be room for more entries.
Thiel would be great
