Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to his iconic role as Conan the Barbarian in a new film titled King Conan, with Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie attached to write and direct for 20th Century Studios.
I love Conan, the movies and Howard's writing both. So all I want right now is to have hope for this. But I don't. At this stage it just saddens me this is made at all. I dont mind being proven wrong, but we all know how this will end.
It’s like hollywood will always be 15-20 years behind these nostalgia reboots. At this point, it’s been over four decades for Conad. Please let him (Ahnald’s take) go gently into that great night.
If I'm going off of what Arnold said, it sounds like the movie is taking a lot of plot points from Robert E. Howard's Conan novel, Hour of the Dragon. In that story, Conan is king of Aquilonia but was forced out due to a coup. He then later regains his throne in typical Conan fashion.
That's a Conan story that could and should be made, though Arnold isn't exactly young anymore, so I don't know how they're going to do the action scenes. At this point though, I would rather have a new Conan that is a direct adaptation of the original Robert E. Howard stories instead of trying to make a sequel to the Arnold films.
Edit: The Phoenix on the Sword and The Scarlet Citadel are two other King Conan stories that they could also be taking notes from.
For me, a Howard purist, Schwarzenegger was not Conan. He just doesn't look like him. They did not even dye his jair black! His eyes are brown not blue and other things. I hate the trope that the bad guy killed his family so he must take revenge. It's used too many times. He did not learn swordmanship in Japan as they showed. Howard never mention Japan, only China (Khitai). How ard's wizards are not leaders of religious sects who lure princesses to their camp. They are aloof creatures hidden from the rest of the world. Thulsa Doom belongs in the Kull Universe, not Conan's Why didn't they use Thoth Amon? There many more things I could complain about but you will be bored. For this movie I have no hope whatsoever. If it is not a woke garbage it will be unfainthful. So , no thank you
You raise a lot of good points and criticisms about the Arnold films.
Even though they are popular and I do overall enjoy it (the first movie specifically), Arnold's Conan isn't Robert E. Howard's Conan. It did some damage in the long run since most people just assume Conan is a dumb brute instead of the cunning strategist and conquering Cimmerian that Howard wrote.
It's why I much prefer that they just make a direct adaptation of the Howard stories - barring any woke garbage, of course.
I will say though that the Basil Poledouris is outstanding and should be carried over to anything Conan related.
Absolutely right about the music. It's just Fantastic! I believe that Milius and his team were influenced from the Marvel comics Conan who was not Howard's Conan either.
Howard did write a Conan where King Conan gets thrown out due to revolt and has to fight his way back into power. So, if it's done right, the story would be awesome.
Somehow a left wing red Hollywood Marxist revolution that gets cut down savagely by Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan does have its appeal, does it not? 🤣

*eyeroll*
*facepalm*
My faith in current Hollywood is that low. Just another old successful movie IP they are almost certainly going to ruin.
I'm willing to be proven wrong, of course, but I have no ready pool of enthusiasm to draw from.
