I think I see what you mean about the heavy-handed influence of gay and lesbian protagonists these days, but I don't think this element of Plur1bus will derail the show for me. I was critical of the final moment of E2, but then realized that Zosia "contains" all of Helen's memories—otherwise, I wouldn't buy Carol's sudden desire to call Z back to her side.
What's interesting to me is how the show is painting the fight between the collective you_will_own_nothing_and_be_happy, or "get a covid injectable or you're banished from the tribe" sort of thing versus the individual, free mind. That most (all?) of the remaining free minds are lulled by the hive's siren song is no surprise (again, just look to the past few years). Many seek the "safety" and ease of the collective over the hard work of the individual's journey. Ah well, we shall see how they proceed with this challenge. So far, I think it's been a fairly balanced portrayal of the pros and cons of both the one and the many.
I suspect the only way out of Helen's conundrum (and that of the story itself) is for Carol to convince "them" that in order to make her happy, they must reverse their project and return to their individual lives. After all, they only want for her happiness, right?
I think Apple is doing the best, most interesting sci-fi on television. I think this is because, unlike all of the other streaming services, they are a technology company first and a media company second. They can afford to take risks on shows without worrying about the service itself being profitable since the company is profitable in other ways. I haven’t loved every show they’ve made, but I appreciate that they’re willing to take risks and champion original IP. I really liked the Pluribus pilot, though I haven’t watched the second episode yet. I don’t see anything wrong with her being a lesbian, that’s just flat out a worldview you and I don’t share. My only gripe is that it seemed from context that they were trying to keep her sexuality a secret for professional reasons, when the romantasy world is generally pretty queer friendly, so I’m not sure why she would need to. And I don’t think, given the plot of the show, that we’ll ever follow up on that. I also disagree with your assertion that Ellen is centered in For All Mankind — the central character is, factually, Ed. Ellen wasn’t even in this last season.

I’m aware of this trend, but I don’t really care about the characters’ sexual preferences or romantic living situations when watching a sci-fi movie. As long as they’re not preaching or pushing some trendy ideology, I don’t give a damn about whom they like in bed if it’s a good show.
If you don't think they're preaching or pushing, simply by having such characters in Every. Single. Show, then you're not actually seeing the trend. The way it works is, there's one or two in a show with dozens of characters -- still well beyond the demographic population, but low enough to get away with -- and they say, "See? It's proportionately representative *in this show*, so if you don't like it, you're a bigot."
But it's in *every* show, not just this one. Its not about how or whether you'd judge an actual real person you work with or met in line at restaurant or whatever; it's about confusing you into applying your judgment of persons to your judgment of trends.
