2K Games, the parent company of Civilization developer Firaxis, confirmed that it laid off an undisclosed number of employees just months after Civilization VII’s release. This Substack is reader-supported.
Remember, before some knob claims that Firaxis has produced some of the all-time greats: the Firaxis team is not the same team that brought out all those greats.
Stay strong and drive these woke companies out of business. This kind of cancel-culture is exactly what they do to us and they will never stop. The only way to win is to fight them on their own turf. Might be sad to admit, but it is reality.
The thing is, I don't think Fireaxis were ever good developers. When they had a well-defined template to follow, like with the 1st X-COM, they did reasonably well. When they were on their own (subsequent XCOMs), they made a complete pig's breakfast out of it.
Same with Civilisation - when did they take over the franchise, Civ4? Now look at what they've made of the series. A complete laughing stock of a game, made by a complete laughing stock of a company...
"Build an Empire to stand the test of time." The slogan that launched a huge franchise. They broke that, the defining core trait of the Civilization idea. The rest is details - each has had its ups and downs, but in all of them, you built *a* civilization, not three random ones (let alone with three random so-called "national leaders," some of whom weren't ever national leaders at all). Having played all previous editions of the main title to death, I'm glad I didn't spring for VII, and I doubt I ever will, even in the $5 discount bin.
I started with Civ II. I missed a few out but bought Civ 5 next. I do occasionally go back in and play it. Civ 5 is a perfectly playable game. I find no essential faults with it. I always play 'Huge' and usually Pangea.
Same here. Civ VI is on my system too, but I don’t feel the same urge to play it. Reading the article makes me wonder whether to have a quick run of V or Beyond Earth today, though. 😎
Civ II was the single best entry in this series. "Just one more turn then I go to bed." Those were the days of great PC games.
Hoot, cheer, shout with joy.

When I think of good Firaxis, I think specifically of Civ V and SM Civ Beyond Earth, with SM Alpha Centauri being the best.
I believe those developers are all dead now, all having fought initially in the American Revolution...
Civ IV is peak Civ. And Civ II before it.
