Cyberpunk 2077 is the reference point everyone still reaches for. CD Projekt Red promised a day-one patch would resolve “most bugs.” It didn’t. Players and reviewers ran into animation glitches, texture pop-in, and outright crashes, particularly on last-gen consoles, and the game’s reputation took years to recover despite genuinely substantial fixes down the line. Battlefield 4 launched with server instability so severe it became one of the most cited broken launches in the genre’s history, then spent months getting rebuilt into something closer to what was promised on day one. Does anyone remember BuzzFeed? Most people still flinch at the name. Before “slop” and “content mill” became the default insults, BuzzFeed wrote the operating manual: find a face that reads as being in touch with the common viewer, attach that face to a product, and let recognition do the work journalism used to do. The personalities were never the point. The association was.

How many of those faces are still around?

That same machine is running on X and YouTube, only now the hosts have better cameras and worse dignity. A footage drop happens, and the accounts that have spent years turning themselves into brands lunge for the most clip-able frame. Mark Kern can post “no ugly stick” to hundreds of thousands of people and never have to answer a single question about whether the gameplay still functions the way it ought to. Whatever the future is for gaming, the current pattern is tiresome: attach yourself to the object everyone is already looking at, extract the most algorithmically feasible position from it, and detach when the object cools. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand that removes these grifter accounts from social media. Deplatforming them is a fantasy; their audiences are larger than the audiences of the people who want them gone. What will actually happen is a slow repetition of the same dead takes until the bit consumes itself. Too many hosts will post the same stills, take the same victory laps, and then the next host will eat the last one alive for being insufficiently sincere. This is market glut.

And it won’t even feel like a door hitting anyone’s ass when one person cycles out and some new grifter takes his place. Instead, the feed will simply become worse and worse.

The franchise’s durable promise was never its photorealistic skin. It was that the map would still work, even if you declined to follow the script. You could stand on a corner. You could watch a scene play out without directly joining it. You could fail sideways into a better anecdote than the mission designer wrote. San Andreas and the better stretches of IV and V understood that the player was an agent inside a toybox, not a cursor being walked through a story reel.

While a QTE involving a heel is not the death knell of the series, it is a tell. The studio that sold chaos for three decades now needs a prompt to tell you when to stab a man in the face. That tells you how little it trusts the person holding the controller. And the same footage that launched posts about the end of the “woke ugly stick” also showed the industry’s real house style: high graphical quality paired with a UI that does all the thinking for you. Yellow paint. Giant arrows. Objective text that arrives before the player even has a chance to get his bearings. Corridor segments dressed up as cities.

There used to be a basic assumption in game design, especially in immersive sims like Thief, Deus Ex, and the best levels of Dishonored: you were expected to fucking look around. You walked into a room, and the room itself was the instruction manual. Maybe a note on a desk, a guard complaining to another guard in the hallway, or a locked door made you look for a key, a vent, a balcony, a window, a weak wall, a sewer grate, or some other way around. The environment had logic. Objects had relationships. The game trusted you to notice them.

And if you missed something? You missed it. That was part of the experience.

Now Rockstar, Ubisoft, and Bethesda have spent years training audiences to wait for the next pop-up. Various quest systems do the thinking for you. Press a button and follow the glowing line. Investigate the highlighted object. Can’t figure out where to go? Here is a marker. Look at the magic compass. Listen to the NPC repeat the solution in your ear. Maybe your own character will loudly announce what you need to do every thirty seconds, in case the terrifying experience of being alone with your own thoughts for a moment becomes too much.

Players have been trained, over years and years of design, to stop observing and experimenting. Now they’re just consumers waiting for instructions. A streamer with thousands of viewers will stand in front of an environment absolutely packed with information and conclude that the game has “failed to explain” something because no glowing icon appeared above it. It is impossible to watch the GTA VI trailer and not also see a product repeatedly congratulating itself for being accessible to these kinds of players.

Grand Theft Auto is one of the worst possible series in which to implement these kinds of restrictions because freedom of movement and freedom of refusal are definitive features. Otherwise, you’re just playing a story game inside an extremely expensive parking lot.

Unfortunately, the mainstream discourse isn’t about this anymore. All you see is vocabulary spent on whether a single NPC is ugly or not, a question a thumbnail can answer in an instant. Influencers who live on donation ticks and outrage clips aren’t going to spend a week arguing about whether any other element answers the call to be a video game.

What are you complaining about? Look at the numbers!

The most predictable excuse.

None of what this article portends requires predicting that GTA VI will “fail.” It will sell. Take-Two could print the logo on a brick and people would still buy it. The point is to acknowledge what the industry has become: a series of cultural events with audiences already waiting in line before anyone has properly explained what the thing actually is.

Numbers answer a different question. They tell us how many people bought the game, but they do not tell us whether the game expanded the possibilities of its medium. They do not tell us whether its systems became more interesting, whether its missions trust the player, whether its world invites experimentation, or whether the studio took creative risks proportional to the resources at its disposal.

A billion dollars in revenue cannot answer design questions.

This is where contemporary critical language tends to collapse on social media. People have become extraordinarily good at measuring popularity and strangely uncomfortable discussing artistic or mechanical regression in the medium itself. The game is either a masterpiece or a failure. It either wins or loses, and if it loses, that failure is often attributed to being “woke,” even when it isn’t.

What if GTA VI is technically astonishing and commercially historic, but still represents a retreat in game design?

You won’t hear much about that because that’s not what the industry is about anymore. The larger an entertainment property becomes, the more pressures begin accumulating around it. There are more shareholders and more marketing commitments. There are brand expectations to maintain. More money is at risk, and therefore more consumers must be satisfied. With every additional layer of institutional weight, risk-taking becomes that much harder to justify.

So instead, you get slop with Latina cake attached to it for gamers who have been taught to maintain the lowest standards that can possibly be managed.

Funny how success gives a studio the resources to attempt anything while simultaneously giving it every financial incentive to attempt as little as possible. But that is the tension worth watching as GTA VI proceeds. Of course it will make money, but will that money buy any of the cultural importance its previous titles achieved while doing more with less?

And remember: the game will sell despite the fact that there were two delays, an $80 conversation, and an ongoing fight over physical media. But people have also just as quickly thrown Cyberpunk 2077’s launch into the memory hole. CD Projekt Red recouped the disaster in preorder money, stapled Phantom Liberty onto the wreck, and waited. Time did the reputational work the patch notes could not. And the influencers announced that the game had been redeemed.

Even after so many of the creative teams that made the thing people loved have already left, the brand remains. Brands are always what remain. And for many people, that’s all that matters.

Obsidian will drop New Vegas 2 any day now. Right?

Companies have taken the place of gods in this arrangement. Developers are the disciples. And all your parasocial attachments complete the circuit. Alana Pearce, Yong Yea, Sphere Hunter, SmashJT, Endymion, Grummz. The machine still runs.

And it runs because the people reading this article will condemn microtransactions in public but preorder the deluxe edition in private. It runs because thousands of developers can be on a death march in November, and the replies will still say, it’s GTA 6, bro.

Do you want games that reward your attention? Then stop letting the conversation be settled by trailer stills that photograph well. Stop treating a sequel number as a sacrament. Stop outsourcing your taste to men and women whose entire trade is remaining adjacent to whatever is trending long enough to stay paid.

The “ugly stick” was a real argument, once, about a real habit in a real industry. It is now a reflex.

Reflexes are what you use when you have nothing to say about the work.

A group calling itself Cyberleek began circulating alleged GTA VI gameplay footage and map images on August 18, nine days ahead of Rockstar’s own planned reveal. The material reportedly includes protagonist Jason at a waterfront home, a driving sequence that ends in a roadside fight, and images claimed to show the complete map of the game’s setting, Leonida. Rockstar has not confirmed the footage is real, but has begun issuing DMCA takedowns against posts sharing it, a response widely read as tacit confirmation.

Cyberleek says the leak is a protest, not a hack for profit. The group’s stated grievance: Take-Two’s decision to sell GTA VI only through digital pre-orders rather than offering a physical release. One post attributed to the group read, in part: “No consumer shall pay for a game through digital storefronts.” Whether that framing holds up, the leak’s timing was deliberate. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix August 27, the streamer’s first-ever video game reveal event, before also airing on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and website six hours later. Netflix VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg called the partnership a chance to debut new GTA footage “with Netflix members first.”

This isn’t new territory for GTA VI. The game has now leaked ahead of a planned reveal three separate times. In September 2022, hacker Arion Kurtaj breached a Rockstar Slack channel and posted more than 90 minutes of early development footage, one of the largest leaks in games industry history. In December 2023, the game’s first official trailer leaked online roughly 15 hours before its scheduled release, forcing Rockstar to publish it early rather than let the leaked copy spread unchecked. Insiders say some of this month’s leaked clips may be over a year old, based on the game version and a song used in the footage, so what’s circulating now may not match what Rockstar shows at the Netflix event.

The leak lands against a backdrop of real delays and real controversy. Take-Two confirmed GTA VI’s development back in February 2022, though reporting suggests the concept dates to 2014. The first trailer set a 2025 launch window; Rockstar has since pushed the release twice, most recently to November 19, 2026, roughly 18 months behind the original internal target, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. The most recent delay arrived days after Rockstar fired 31 UK staffers, a move the UK’s Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain called union-busting and Rockstar has denied was connected to the delay. Rockstar’s pattern of pushing release dates in the name of polish isn’t new either: both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped later than their original announced windows.

Community trackers have already catalogued roughly 163 named vehicles from official trailers and screenshots, working toward an estimated 200-plus total, and fan-built map projects using leak data put Leonida at roughly two to two-and-a-half times the size of GTA V’s map, though none of that is officially confirmed.

With the most anticipated game in years already carrying two delays and a history of leaks, does another pre-reveal leak actually cost Rockstar anything, or does the resulting attention just build more heat for August 27?

Absolum presents itself as a high fantasy of rebellion and restoration. It borrows the outer garments of the old stories: a ruined kingdom, remnants of dying races, an oppressive tyrant, and a small band of outcasts who rise against him. Yet the game systematically un-names the very relations that alone make societal restoration possible. It speaks the language of an epic while refusing the grammatical call of the bod and of sex.

Galandra the elf was once a maiden of Yeldrim. A catastrophe came and the role of warrior was forced upon her. However, the game does not treat this as a tragic necessity under which a woman still carries the memory of the form she was meant to fill. Instead the story has her declare that the male role feels natural to her and so the maidenhood that once oriented her toward the continuance of her people is discarded. In a land whose kingdom has been destroyed, she chooses the sword as her final speech. Her body no longer heeds the call of her ancestors; instead, she answers herself to do as she feels.

Karl the dwarf appears, at first, a more solid character. He fights with his fists and with a gun. Like classic dwarves, he enjoys filling his belly. But then the subplot reveals the truth of dwarven generation: they are not born of man and woman. They are forged. Minerals and gems are gathered and cast into the furnace of the All-Maker. Karl himself must perform this act to create a child. And so, the living speech between male and female is replaced by the mute work of a forge. Continuance becomes a technical problem solved by materials rather than a vow spoken between persons.

Brome the frog wizard carries a similar refusal. His people, the Mowlai, change sex under pressure. He was once female and he laid eggs. Then, after his people were attacked by the tyrant Azra, he became male in order to give those eggs purpose. The game presents this as an adaptive necessity and even as natural wisdom. Alex Jones’s old reference about making the frogs gay is made literal and solemn. What was once a fixed polarity that produced the next generation is treated as a costume to be exchanged when the situation demands it. The species survives by dissolving the very distinction upon which actual survival rests.

Cider completes the pattern. A woman by voice, she has had her body replaced, piece by piece, with the parts of puppets. The trauma erased the memory of what she was. Therefore she settles into the claim of being neither male nor female. The game offers this as some kind of coherent identity when that coherence was only made possible due to her loss. Trauma is allowed to rewrite the indicative of the body. The person is no longer called by the form into which she was born; she is called only by the absence that remains after the form has been broken.

Around these four figures the larger story turns the same inversion. The wizards of Talamh meddled with powers beyond their comprehension and brought chaos upon the world. Azra rose and imposed an empire that contained the chaos. The game names this empire tyranny. Order itself is the villain. The greater threat, the interdimensional creature named Absolum, was the very thing the empire sought to hold in check. And when the rebels dismantle the structure, the chaos is not truly overcome. In feminist fashion, the evil is negotiated with (via lullaby) and told to return from whence it came.

The heroes themselves are kept alive by the Ritual of Rebirth. Each return from death is purchased by the sacrifice of others who remain nameless. Only the graveyard itself is known. And the heroes just accept it. They do not speak against the exchange at all. Their immortality is bought by the quiet consumption of persons who have no identities of their own.

At the center stands Uchawi, the Root Mother who revives the party. By the end of the game, you discover she is the wife of Azra and she carries his miscegenated child. After Azra’s empire falls Uchawi remains the single mother of that child. The speech of the story ends not with the restoration of a people under a shared law, but with the solitary figure of the mother after the father has been eliminated.

The final confrontation makes the refusal complete. Absolum, the force that threatens to unmake the world, is revealed as something like an otherworldly child sealed within the outer casing of some womb. The heroes beat the casing of that womb until it cracks, essentially performing a cosmic C-section. Then Uchawi sings. She sings a lullaby. The song soothes the child and it ceases its work of destruction and departs for the stars.

Evil is not named as that which must be judged and driven out by a higher speech. It is treated as a restless infant that can be reasoned with, negotiated with, and finally convinced to retreat. The imperative that once called men to stand against the chaos is replaced by a maternal song that asks the chaos to be quiet.

A people continues only when the body is addressed by a call that precedes the self: the call of the race that must be continued, the call of the sex that must answer the other sex, and the call of the order that can hold chaos at bay. Absolum gathers the outer signs of that call and then systematically un-speaks them. The maiden becomes the warrior who feels no need of the old role. The dwarf forges children from rocks. The frog changes sex. The broken body claims its brokenness is its truth. A mechanism for the sacrifice of nameless people is accepted as a means to overthrow an empire of order. A mixed child is left to be raised with a single mother.

And the final evil is sung to sleep as if it were a child that only needed understanding.

Fantasy once served as the speech by which a culture remembered that it must answer for its future. When that speech is emptied of the relations that make answering possible, the story can only gesture at restoration while dissolving its conditions. The heroes of Talamh may fight well, but the game itself remains speechless before the one question every people must answer: how shall the living continue? It answers by un-making every traditional form of continuance.

Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin opened a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee investigation into Roblox on August 12, sending a letter to founder and CEO David Baszucki that gave the company until August 31 to preserve records and turn over documents tied to child safety on the platform. Their letter cited a specific figure: Roblox reported 65,381 instances of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2025, more than double what it reported the year before.

That number lands after roughly a year in which state attorneys general, private families, and child advocacy groups built one of the largest legal campaigns ever aimed at a single gaming platform.

The lawsuits started in Louisiana

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed the first major state suit in August 2025, describing Roblox in her announcement as “a hub for pedophiles.” Her complaint cited specific user-created game titles allegedly hosted on the platform and referenced a Livingston Parish arrest in which police say a suspect used voice-altering software to sound like a young girl while communicating with children on Roblox.

Kentucky followed two months later. Attorney General Russell Coleman’s October 2025 suit accused the platform of functioning as “a hunting ground for child predators.” Texas filed the third state suit in November, with Attorney General Ken Paxton describing the company’s failures as protecting children from “sick and twisted freaks hiding behind a screen.” Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma each filed their own suits over the following months. Georgia, South Carolina, and Connecticut opened investigations without filing suit. More than 130 private lawsuits, mostly from families alleging their children were groomed or abused after contact made on the platform, were consolidated into multidistrict litigation in federal court.

One procedural fight ran alongside the substantive claims. Roblox’s terms of service include an arbitration clause the company tried to use to keep abuse lawsuits out of public court. A California judge rejected that approach, ruling a high-profile case against the platform had to proceed in public.

Three states settled, more kept filing

Rather than litigate every claim, Roblox began settling. Nevada reached a $12.5 million deal in April 2026, followed the same week by Alabama at $12.2 million and West Virginia at $11 million, a combined $35.8 million (plus a possible $5 million penalty if Alabama’s terms are violated within four years). Each settlement funded a mix of school resource officers, safety liaisons, and public awareness campaigns, and each required Roblox to expand age verification, restrict chat between minors and adults, and stop encrypting messages sent by users under 16.

West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey described the leverage that produced his state’s deal directly, telling Roblox it could work with his office or “this will end up in litigation.” Nevada, Alabama, and West Virginia chose settlement. Louisiana, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Arkansas did not, and their suits remain active.

The FTC complaint added new specifics

In May 2026, the advocacy groups Fairplay and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation filed a complaint asking the FTC to investigate Roblox under Section 5 of the FTC Act, which bars unfair or deceptive business practices. Their filing included test results: researchers using an account registered as a five-year-old gained access to dating and romance-themed experiences with no verification, and separate under-13 test accounts encountered sexual language and racial slurs within minutes of joining public servers. The complaint also cited a 10-year-old who spent more than $7,000 on the platform in two months.

The filing carried one family’s account by name. Heather Lindquist’s 15-year-old son Bodhi died in December after what the complaint describes as grooming by predators he met on Roblox. “The parental controls on Roblox did not protect my son,” Lindquist said. Fairplay communications director Ashwin Verghese summarized the imbalance parents face this way: “it’s not a fair fight.”

Where the Senate investigation fits

Hawley and Durbin’s letter arrives as the newest entry in that timeline, not a standalone event. Their August 12 letter to Baszucki directed Roblox to preserve records tied to child safety, abuse, bullying, and financial exploitation, and to answer a set of questions by August 31. “Congress will not look the other way,” the senators wrote.

Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, responded with the same defense the company has offered throughout the year: mandatory facial age estimation for chat access, parental controls, and moderation systems. “Roblox is built on the foundation of safety,” Kaufman said in a statement.

Roblox has more than 30 million daily users under age 13, by the company’s own count, and advocacy groups estimate more than half of all users are under 17. That scale is the throughline connecting a year of state lawsuits, three settlements, an FTC complaint, and now a Senate subcommittee with subpoena power. Each new filing has made a version of the same argument: a platform built for children needs to prove its safety claims, not just state them.

Does a year of settlements and mounting federal scrutiny suggest Roblox is finally being forced to fix a real problem, or does the size of the userbase mean no policy change will ever fully catch up to the risk?

Kim Belair, CEO of Sweet Baby Inc., gave the entire postmodern playbook away in 2019 and most people quietly ignored it. At a GDC panel that year she observed that the project of training people not to see color had not succeeded. What it produced, she said, were token characters. People who had been instructed to notice race and sex in a certain way were still noticing them, only not in the “correct” way. When it came to naming that correct way, she could offer only a feeling. The correct noticing remained undescribed because ordinary human perception does not work that way. This is because people naturally function by means of categorization. Postmodern speech tried to escape those boundaries and install a new, more virtuous seeing. What it actually produced was a multiplication of noticing while denying the ordinary means by which human beings have historically recognized one another.

Kim’s panel encapsulates the entire “woke” project as it was implemented so blatantly across media over the last decade. It was, in effect, a rush to the finish line. The entire postmodern ambition, to get people to think outside the box of generations of ordinary human thought processes, had not succeeded. When the slower work of reshaping how people actually see had stalled, the faster work of flooding the screen with the correct signals became the substitute strategy. Faced with that failure, a cohort of progressives, high on the values of modern progressive institutions, advanced through media harder than ever before.

This is how power has functioned since the Civil Rights settlement: continuous identity accounting became both the moral requirement and the practical path to institutional position. Those who could perform the required noticing most fluently were elevated; those who could not were sidelined. When the slower work of reshaping ordinary perception stalled, the same institutional logic that had placed them in power simply continued to operate through the channel it already controlled: media.

Almost everyone who covered the Sweet Baby Inc. dramas of the past few years completely missed this and most continue to miss it. The public conversation stayed at the level of whether a given video game was “well-written” and whether it preached its messages too obviously. The conversation never touched on the progressive ideals or institutional reward structures that had placed these people in positions of cultural power in the first place. Those were treated as a given. The scandals were therefore discussed as failures of craft and never as the predictable output of a speech that had already declared ordinary perception insufficient and set about replacing it through the only channel still fully under its control.

In Layman’s Terms

Remember Captain Panaka? The character was introduced in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but you would not have know his name until the credits rolled given it is never said by anyone. Panaka was head of the Royal Naboo Security Forces and was heavily involved in much of the action throughout the movie. He is even given a number of lines to speak. Yet the character has never been featured as prominently as, say, Boba Fett whose helmet alone generated a mythology. For most people, Panaka (if he is remembered at all) is simply that black guy who served under Queen Amidala, argued briefly with Qui-Gon Jinn, and then was involved with the siege of the palace at the end of Episode I. Funnily enough, an old Episode I video game expanded his role and made him a playable character. He even appears in some of the Lego Star Wars titles as well. Yet, even that small enlargement has not made him a prominent character.

A generation later, the same grammar reappears. In Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, a black female Sith appears named Reva. She is given a personal vendetta, several action and dialogue sequences, and even her own redemption arc. Yet many viewers met her as a blatant demographic decision and not as a true character. And whether or not the decision to cast her was made with the best of intentions is besides the point. Instead, the question on everyone’s mind should be, what changed? Why is one character left blurred in obscurity while the other is written as demanding your acknowledgement?

The Age of Entitlement

The Civil Rights Movement set double mandate that has infected contemporary storytelling. We are required to see color but the refusal to see it appropriately is treated as a crime. The ideal of colorblindness, the belief that race or ethnic identity can recede into the background of civic and narrative life, has been set aside. In its place stands a new requirement: the correct manner of being racist. This means one must adopt a completely positive outlook that treats the elevation and glorification of particular races as a moral good in itself. Certain faces must be advanced, stories must be centered, and casting decisions must be celebrated under an umbrella of historical redress. At the same time, the audience is forbidden to be “racist.” And that contradiction has been left unresolved.

The very act of putting one race forward as a privileged moral category is, by definition, a racial preference. But, for some reason, we don’t call this racist. Instead, our current speech declares this preference virtuous while branding any resistance to it as the true racism. Therein is the contradiction: the eye is commanded both to discriminate and to deny that it is discriminating. This grammar has resulted in an ideological double vision.

Captain Panaka’s presence was pre-empted by speech that surrounded his casting. The age had already declared that someone like him must be seen. The characters, as an individual, was left to compete with a Civil Rights-era ideal. Then, a generation later, the same speech produces Reva. Yet, where Panaka is quietly secondary, Reva is loudly marked. Both figures were pre-empted by the same grammar, yet one is diminished by it while the other is inflated by it,

Why did the grammar change? Consider how Mace Windu is remembered. He is recalled less as a specific temperament than as Samuel Jackson, as the black Jedi who used a purple lightsaber. The blade and the skin became the primary data and his role as Jedi Council member receded behind those categories. Consider how the character Ki-Adi-Mundi survives in memory largely through his alien designs. Ki-Adi-Mundi’s elongated skull has been joked about for years as the “penis-head Jedi”, a visual oddity functions as a high-contrast signal in the same way Boba Fett’s helmet or Windu’s purple saber does. The point being that these are not deep personalities. Instead, they are distinctive silhouettes the mind can latch onto when the writing supplies little else.

When it comes to media consumption, the audience is culturally conditioned to elevate certain signals to decisive prominence. Those signals will almost always win over actual character development, even when the signals remain purely formal or anatomical, and regardless of any moral ledger attached to them. The eye, which is trained to seize high-contrast markers, seizes them wherever they appear.

People in marketing understood this mechanism earlier and more clearly than most critics. They recognized that high-contrast signals, once installed in the culture, can function as reliable attention devices. A public that has been taught to notice certain markers with heightened moral or visual intensity, could be deployed to capture and direct attention. And so, the same speech that declared certain faces must be seen also discovered that white guilt is a powerful and reliable motivator. What happened in the last decade was that markets pushed this realization into experimentation. White guilt was monetized and demographic signaling was sold to them as virtue. The result was not the quiet recession of race into the background of civic life, but its permanent elevation into a high-stakes moral and commercial category. The audience was being trained to seize a new marker while the market intended to profit from the training. And so, what the previous age had made salient for reasons of historical redress, marketing simply put to work.

Anita Sarkeesian’s foray into video games offers another clear case. Holding a degree in the relevant media and communications fields, she operated at the intersection of activism and marketing. Her work did more than diagnose representation; it leveraged shame. Men were to be made to feel the weight of alleged historical and cultural culpability before being guided toward the cultural postures that demonstrated proper awareness of their sins. Guilt itself became a marketing instrument. To purchase the correct products or to support the correct corporations carried the correct signals. Affirming this publicly was a means of securing moral relief.

To better understand how we got here, one must read Christopher Caldwell’s The Age of Entitlement. What is entailed therein is that the formal equality of the Civil Rights era was quickly supplemented by an administrative and cultural apparatus that required continuous racial accounting. This tasked all institutions, including media, with rooting out bias. Therefore, race had to be kept constantly visible as the diagnostic category. To demonstrate that one is not racist, one must notice race in the correct way. But, of course, this also means noticing it at all. The instruction “do not see race” and the simultaneous instruction “notice under-representation and correct it” cannot both be obeyed cleanly. Moreover, the second instruction tends to dominate because it is measurable and enforceable.

The Great Un-noticing Continues

Our speech creates the times we inhabit. The words a culture repeatedly speaks both describe the world around us and help us live within it. By speaking race into permanent salience, such as insisting that it must be noticed and morally weighted, the age altered the shared perceptual field in which persons appear to one another. The original ideal had been that race ought to be allowed to recede into the background of civic and narrative life. Instead, it was deliberately kept in the foreground. Salience gave certain actors a durable form of power. As long as race remained a high-stakes moral category, the charge of “racist” retained its force as a social and professional weapon. To keep the category visible was to keep the weapon loaded.

Marketing did not invent that salience. The elevation of race as a high-stakes marker was already underway through institutions, education, and moral discourse. What marketing recognized was the commercial utility of a public that had been trained to notice. Once the eye had been taught to seize certain markers with heightened intensity, those same markers could be used to capture attention and direct desire. Marketing used this new grammar to accelerate the reach of this salience and and deepen its hold on everyday perceptions.

Between roughly 2016 and 2025 the contradictions of that speech (the race be noticed as a decisive moral category) became public and, for a time, unanswerable. The same voices that insisted certain faces must be elevated also insisted that noticing the elevation was bigotry. The same institutions that celebrated demographic correction (DEI mandates) denied that any pattern of correction existed. The audience was ordered both to see and not to see, to affirm the ledger and to pretend the ledger was not being kept.

Speech cannot sustain a double command indefinitely (Matthew 6:24).

And when the commands finally collided in full public view, trust collapsed. Eventually, audiences were ordered both to see and not to see.

As of the past two years the louder woke declarations have quieted within much of mainstream media. The patterns often continue, only without the accompanying sermons. Subtle continuity has proven more effective than open proclamation. Many critics who spent years documenting forced representation and identity politic and spoke against it all now wish to declare the former categories (race, sex, etc.) incidental again. They speak as though the old color-blind transparency can simply be restored by an announcement, as if the last decade were a fever dream from which the culture has now politely awakened. Their direction tends to remain at a level of vague complaints about “the writing” without going beyond the surface about these things. They do not name the institutions that produce the writers, the educational formation that inducts them into these principles, nor the people who staff those institutions and continue to operate according to that same grammar. Many of the formerly “anti-woke” now appear to believe that “woke” was defeated last year and that anyone willing to call it out today is simply overreacting.

Have these critics learned nothing?

This is the same naïve faith that people will just reset their perceptions and allow the original interjections to take hold. Formerly it was “we must notice.” Now it is “we must un-notice.”

Neutrality is a myth. The supposed “pendulum” between left and right consistently makes concessions to the Left and none to the Right. We have already seen that the mythic “middle ground” that insists upon its own even-handedness possesses no mechanism of enforcement whenever the Left attacks it. But then, when the Right makes any cultural ground, these

Centrists immediately defers to the Left. This whole idea of a “balanced center” is, in operation, a one-way valve: pressure from one direction is absorbed and accommodated; pressure from the other is treated as the real threat to neutrality itself.

This posture cannot last. You cannot put speech back into silence. The genie called forth by more than a decade of institutional and cultural insistence does not return to its bottle because a centrist, exhausted by it all, now longs to restore the quieter accommodations of the Obama years. Priors do not dissolve by decree. No one approaches a story as a blank slate. We all carry genre expectations and franchise memory. More than ever, audiences are reactionary.

Media criticism that insists on some blasé, blank-slate posture while operating inside a culture that spent years making particular identity traits salient is not rigorous. Instead, it is the latest version of the Dunning-Krueger effect: enough knowledge to see that something went wrong, but insufficient knowledge to see how deeply the wrong has already taken root.

To speak only of symptoms while leaving the sources unnamed is to leave the speech that generates the symptoms intact. Platforms built on documenting the forced noticing cannot later treat the residue of that noticing as a mere failure of craft without explaining the discontinuity.

Our culture remains in this condition because the institutions that formed the present generation of storytellers have not renounced the speech that formed them. The educational backgrounds and the professional incentives continue to operate, only they have learned to do so with subtle messaging.

To recognize what is being done in our culture, one must first recognize what is under attack: the fundamental sediment of Christian thought and practice. The postmodern project was always an attempt to undermine Christian cultural inheritance and install something new in its place. Ordinary noticing of beauty and ugliness, of good and evil, of intelligence and stupidity, of quality and its absence, was treated as a box that had to be escaped. The same suspicion fell on the most basic relational categories: husband and wife, man and woman, parent and child, brother and sister, son and daughter. Under an egalitarian logic these distinctions are ultimately problematic. But the slower work of reshaping public perception about all these things had failed. And so, the same institutional logic that had elevated the reformers channeled it harder than. Thus, your screens were flooded with ever more pervasive forms of virtue signaling.

This is why the Sweet Baby Inc. dramas are so widely misread. The public conversation stayed at the level of whether a given game or show was “well-written” and whether it preached too obviously. It never touched the deeper questions about the ideals and institutional reward structures that had placed these people in positions of cultural power in the first place, nor the older Christian formation that the project was trying to supersede.

What then? Shall we continue to refuse to leave the current grammar unchallenged? Should we treat the ongoing cultural distortion as some kind of accident of bad craft? Or shall we name it as the predictable fruit of a speech that was deliberately installed and has not been revoked?

Warren Spector, the designer behind Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief and Disney Epic Mickey, announced this week that he is retiring from game development. Spector posted the news to his LinkedIn page on Monday night, closing out a run that started in 1982 and put him behind the creation of one genre that studios are still building games around today.

Spector did not hedge on the announcement itself, but he did hedge on his own history of hedging. He opened the statement by admitting he has walked back retirement talk before and this time he means it. The reasoning he gave breaks down into two parts. The practical part: he is a month away from his 44th year as a developer, and by his own account age and health are factoring into the decision. The personal part is blunter. Spector said the industry has changed and it’s just not as much fun for me anymore, adding that a new generation of developers has earned its own turn.

He wrote on LinkedIn: “Let me cut right to the chase,” he wrote. “I’m retiring from game development. At least I think so. I’ve been here before and changed my mind but this time I’m pretty sure I mean it.

“I’ve had a great career. Wouldn’t change a thing even if I could. But the reasons to retire are simple – I’m a month away from my 44th year as a developer. I’ve had the chance to work on tabletop roleplaying games and boardgames. I’ve worked on more digital games than I can remember – 17 full games, I think, and 9 or so add-on packs.

“Gratifyingly, some of those games are still being played 15, 20, 30 years later. And most of them have been in a genre that has had influence beyond what I or anyone else expected. I’ve run teams as small as a dozen and as big as 800. I’ve worked for big companies and done start-ups. I like to think I’ve helped some insanely talented people along in their careers (that last is the most important).

“With all that behind me and with age and health (my business) catching up with me I’m feeling like I’ve done what I set out to do. It’s time to write some books, do a lot of reading, do some lecturing, maybe do some consulting (feel free to get in touch about those last two). Also there’s a keyboard here just waiting for me to get my piano chops back.”

He is not walking away with a clean slate. Spector said there are three specific games he still wants to make, one large, one small, and a third he described as something he does not yet know how to build. None of the three are happening now. In their place, Spector laid out plans to write books, read, lecture, and take on consulting work, along with getting back to piano, an instrument he said has been sitting untouched in his house.

The retirement caps a career that ran through some of PC gaming’s defining stretches. Spector joined Origin Systems in 1989 and co-produced Ultima 6 and Wing Commander before moving into the work most associated with his name: System Shock, Thief: Deadly Shadows, and Deus Ex, the game that established the immersive sim as a genre studios were still chasing decades later in titles like Prey and Dishonored. He also produced EA’s Crusader: No Remorse, then took an unexpected turn into Disney Interactive to serve as creative director on the Epic Mickey games. His final chapter ran through OtherSide Entertainment, the studio he co-founded, where he worked toward a System Shock 3 revival that stalled out over IP and licensing problems before the studio shipped Thick As Thieves this past May. That game did not find an audience, and OtherSide followed its release with heavy layoffs, a detail that gives Spector’s “not as much fun anymore” line some real weight rather than reading as generic industry fatigue.

Spector’s footprint extends past his own credits. The Game Developers Conference Association gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and he helped build the game design program at the University of Texas at Austin, putting him in a position to train a chunk of the developers now working the jobs he is stepping away from. He closed his statement by telling younger developers their job is to make people forget people like me ever existed, then told them to stop reading and get back to work.

Spector was part of a small group of designer-auteurs, alongside names like Richard Garriott and Sid Meier, whose credit on a box used to tell players something specific about what they were about to play. That model of game development has largely disappeared, replaced by franchise management driven by publishers and committees rather than a single creative voice with a track record. One user shot back, “hey man counterpoint, have you ever though about making good video games?” A handful of others told him to ignore the noise and keep posting for the players who actually care.

GameSpot picked up the story Monday morning with a piece framing the entire backlash as another case of manufactured internet negativity, built around Stevenson’s algorithm complaint and a comparison to 2018’s “Puddlegate” flap over Spider-Man’s E3 demo footage. The outlet also tied the mood to Sony’s decision to end PS5 disc production, arguing PlayStation fans are primed to be angry about something regardless of the actual target. What that framing never engages with is the specific, more substantive criticism running through a large share of the actual posts, criticism about writing credits and casting rather than combat animations.

One thread centers on who wrote the game. A widely shared post from X account Poliwar claimed the “lead screenwriter” for Wolverine is an author of “LGBT novels for black teenagers,” tying her directly to Spider-Man 2 and asserting she “ruined” that game’s story. The writer in question is Brittney Morris, and the facts check out only partway. Morris’s own X bio confirms she holds the title “Advanced Writer” at Insomniac across both Spider-Man PS5 and Wolverine PS5, and her author bio lists contributions to both games. What isn’t accurate is “lead screenwriter.” Wikipedia’s credited writing team for Wolverine lists four names, Mary Kenney, Walt Williams, Joe Halstead, and Nick Folkman, with Morris not among the top-billed credits. She’s a confirmed contributor, not the sole or lead voice on the script. Morris is the bestselling author of Slay and The Cost of Knowing, both aimed at young Black readers, and her X handle includes a pride flag, consistent with the “LGBT novels” framing, though the claim that she personally “ruined” Spider-Man 2’s story is a subjective opinion stated as fact in the original post, not something borne out by that game’s reception or its list of eleven credited writers.

A second thread, from account LearningTheLaw, compiled images of six Wolverine characters under the caption “The female and confirmed They/Them characters in the video game Marvel’s Wolverine,” pairing character models with what the post presents as the real-world performers or artists behind them, including a credit reveal reading “Leech: Noga Wind.” That post has pulled over 300 likes and 3,700 views this week. Fandom Pulse has not independently verified each individual’s stated identity beyond what’s shown in that post, and readers should treat the specific pairings as claims circulating on X rather than confirmed Insomniac casting statements.

Meanwhile, early hands-on previews, including GameSpot’s own, have been positive on Wolverine’s combat and tone, and the game remains a strong PlayStation Store preorder performer, so the backlash clearly hasn’t tanked interest. But collapsing every criticism into “algorithm-driven toxicity” lets outlets like GameSpot avoid engaging with a verifiable claim about writing credits sitting right inside the backlash they’re dismissing. Stevenson may be right that X’s engagement incentives are distorting the volume and tone of the reaction. That doesn’t mean every question inside that reaction is manufactured or false, and treating them as identical is its own kind of dodge.

O’Donnell’s connection to Halo runs to the franchise’s origin. Working alongside Michael Salvatori at Bungie, he composed the iconic theme first unveiled at the 1999 MacWorld trailer and scored every mainline Halo game through Halo: Reach, along with later work on Destiny before a contentious split from Bungie in 2014. For SacAnime’s Halo 25th anniversary celebration over Labor Day weekend in Sacramento, he was never a minor add-on. Cortana voice actress Jen Taylor had already posted excitedly on Instagram about reuniting with O’Donnell and other franchise veterans at the event, and O’Donnell says the convention was still requesting promotional material from him as recently as two weeks before pulling his invitation.

The cancellation notice, which O’Donnell posted as a screenshot, cited “recently reported statements” from his political campaign and said organizers had to act because the LGBTQ staff does not feel comfortable if you attend the event. SacAnime has since scrubbed O’Donnell from its website and deleted its promotional posts about his appearance

Those “recently reported statements” trace back to July 17, when the X account Headquarters, formerly tied to the Kamala HQ rapid-response operation from Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, posted a clip of O’Donnell on The WDW Pro Show under the headline claiming he called for persecuting LGBTQ+ people and treating them as an existential threat. The video tells a different story. O’Donnell’s actual remarks are: “Talk about an existential threat, this is where we are right now. We are on the cliff looking down into the abyss. And the abyss is Marxism, it’s anti-Western philosophy. There’s a weird alliance of all these groups who like to pretend they’re oppressed. The LGBTQ+ people, the Islamists, the Marxists, they’re all together now.”

O’Donnell isn’t a bystander to this fight either. He’s the sitting Republican nominee against Democratic incumbent Rep. Susie Lee in a district Reuters has flagged as one of the closest and most consequential House races in the country, a seat Trump carried narrowly in both 2016 and 2024. President Trump gave O’Donnell his full endorsement in April, calling him a world-class composer and entrepreneur, and O’Donnell went on to win his primary in June with nearly 44% of the vote, well clear of his closest competitor. The NRCC has since opened a campaign field office in Las Vegas for him, with actor Dean Cain appearing at the ribbon-cutting earlier this month.

“In January, I was invited to attend a Halo reunion at SacAnime over Labor Day weekend in Sacramento, CA. I was excited to attend with so many stars, including Jen Taylor and Steve Downs, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Halo with all of our fans. They even asked me to record a video promoting my attendance two weeks ago.

After SacAnime made numerous announcements of my attendance over this last weekend, I was told I was being disinvited because I called Marxism an existential threat. They have removed me from their website and deleted all their posts on social media promoting my appearance.

My existential threat comment has been twisted by my political opponents a lot over the last few weeks and anyone who saw the video knows that to be true. That is why I know it’s not why I have been pulled from SacAnime. I was pulled because I am a Republican candidate for office.

Funny enough, SacAnime’s decision proves my point. Silencing the opposition is a key component of Marxism and that is one reason why Marxism is an existential threat to our country.

I genuinely believed we had put an end to Cancel Culture after the 2024 election but that was just the end to what AOC called “Woke 1” earlier this week. Woke 2 is here and it is just as eager to silence and destroy conservatives as Woke 1.

Unfortunately for them, I can’t be silenced. I will continue to use my voice to speak out against the threats our country faces, especially from Marxists who seek to destroy the United States.”

This isn’t O’Donnell’s first brush with industry-adjacent politics. He’s spoken publicly for years about what he views as ideological decline in gaming and entertainment more broadly, and his congressional run has been explicitly framed around pushing back against what he and his campaign describe as woke overreach in both government and culture. None of that background involves calls for persecuting anyone. It’s standard conservative political rhetoric about ideology and culture, the kind of argument made constantly across cable news and campaign trails without triggering a single disinvitation, right up until a mischaracterized clip from a partisan account gave a convention promoter cover to cut him loose.

Jen Taylor already told her followers she was excited to share a stage with O’Donnell next month. SacAnime scrubbed him from its website instead, citing comments he never actually made.

E-Day sends players back fourteen years before the original Gears of War, to the day the Locust Horde first surfaced and attacked the city of Kalona. Marcus Fenix (voiced again by John DiMaggio) and Dom Santiago (Carlos Ferro) anchor the new Bravo Squad alongside two newcomers: Lucas Reyes, a green comms officer, and Mags Carter, a former Gear working at Kalona’s Imulsion refinery, played by Elizabeth Ludlow. The beta opened to pre-order customers and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on August 6 and runs a second, fully open weekend from August 13 through 17, ahead of the game’s October 6 release.

The flashpoint is a pattern fans started cataloging within days of the early access weekend going live. In multiplayer matches, Marcus repeatedly praises Carter by name, with lines like “Great shooting, Carter” and “Nice shot, Carter,” while no other squadmate gets the same acknowledgment. Critics point out that this breaks with Marcus’s established character, a soldier written across five prior games as guarded and sparing with praise. Carter is also the only Bravo Squad member with an Epic-tier cosmetic available in the beta, the “Blast Damage Mags” skin unlocked at player level 20.

The backlash escalated when Kate Rayner, The Coalition’s VP and studio technical director, who came out publicly as transgender in 2021 and has posted about Trans Day of Visibility in past years, weighed in to connect the character to the importance of visibility. For critics already convinced the dialogue pattern wasn’t accidental, the post read as confirmation rather than clarification.

Content creator Yellowflash, who covered the controversy for his audience, didn’t mince words about what the post did to his interest in the game: “This doesn’t make me want to play the game. Sorry. Doesn’t.” He tied it to a complaint he’s made about other Xbox-published titles before, pointing to Halo Campaign Evolved’s differing in-game consequences for killing male versus female marine NPCs as a pattern rather than a one-off: “Why should anybody assume that? At least with a Western [game]... how many times do Western studios have to purposely do the same thing over and over and over again?”

The timing compounds the problem for The Coalition. Gears of War 4 landed well with the fanbase, but Judgment and Gears 5 both underperformed critically and commercially, leaving E-Day to carry the weight of proving the franchise could recover. The beta had already drawn one round of complaints days earlier, when The Coalition initially withheld 4v4 Versus from early access players before reversing the decision within hours. A second controversy stacked on top of that, over a fictional soldier getting more compliments than her squadmates, is not the story a franchise in recovery mode wants dominating its beta weekend.

The financial mechanics behind the deal are where the optimism runs into real numbers. Roughly $36 billion of the purchase price came from investor equity, with the remaining $20 billion financed through debt arranged by JPMorgan, of which EA itself will carry about $18 billion once the dust settles, at an estimated $1.8 billion in annual interest. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier flagged that EA’s annual EBITDA sits around $1.5 billion, tight enough against that interest bill that the company has told debt investors it plans roughly $700 million in yearly cost cuts, including $170 million specifically labeled “organizational efficiencies.” Schreier read that line as a signal for layoffs. EA has not confirmed any specific cuts.

The debt package itself found strong buyer demand despite the layoff speculation, with high-yield bonds and leveraged loans tied to the deal drawing more than $45 billion in investor orders, well above what was needed to fill the $20 billion facility. EA’s own numbers heading into the close were solid rather than distressed: an August 3 earnings report showed revenue and profit gains for the April-through-June quarter, with net bookings up $51 million year over year, though the figure landed below analyst expectations. Ampere Analysis’s Piers Harding-Rolls said the new owners will likely look to cut excess spending and streamline the workforce to free up cash flow, while Circana’s Mat Piscatella noted that leveraged buyouts have historically had a mixed record for the companies acquired, without predicting a specific outcome for EA.

EA isn’t a stranger to cuts regardless of ownership structure. The company laid off 300 to 400 staff last year, including about 100 at Respawn Entertainment, alongside canceling a Titanfall project in development, and confirmed further undisclosed layoffs in March across the studios behind Battlefield 6, including Criterion, DICE, Motive, and Ripple Effect. Whether the new debt load accelerates that pattern or EA’s promised investment in AI and “bold creativity” offsets it remains an open question that neither side has settled with hard numbers yet.

Jason Schreier put out a new video defending his Activision Blizzard reporting, and we have to ask a simple question after watching it: where’s the proof?

For anyone unfamiliar with the players here, Schreier is a Bloomberg reporter who spent roughly eight years at Kotaku building a reputation on video game industry investigations, particularly around crunch culture and labor conditions. He’s the author of Play Nice, a history of Blizzard Entertainment published in 2024, and it’s his Bloomberg reporting and that book he’s now defending. His critic, Grummz, is Mark Kern, a game industry veteran who worked at Blizzard itself in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a producer on StarCraft and Diablo II and as team lead on the original World of Warcraft, before leaving to co-found Red 5 Studios. Kern has spent years as an outspoken industry commentator, and he’s not new to pushing back on games journalism he views as agenda-driven.

The backdrop is the 2021 lawsuit California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing filed against Activision Blizzard, alleging widespread sexual harassment and discrimination. It was an explosive story at the time. It triggered walkouts, protests, and ultimately factored into Microsoft’s acquisition of the company. It’s also the case that ended in a settlement carrying language that undercuts a lot of what got reported in the years since, which is exactly what this new dispute is about.

Schreier spends the opening minutes of the video dismissing his critics as “outrage merchants” and “squealing cretins” who don’t ask questions or talk to sources. That’s a strange opening move for someone about to deliver an argument built almost entirely on unnamed sources and vague characterizations, or “outrage merchanting,” as one might put it. He tells his audience to trust him because he “spent all day on the phone with people,” while the people he criticizes get mocked for supposedly not doing that work. Fine, but a phone call isn’t evidence. It’s an anecdote. And the video is packed with anecdotes standing in for proof.

The Settlement Language He Can’t Talk Around

The most important moment in the video is the one Schreier himself reads out loud and then rushes past. The Activision Blizzard settlement states, in his own quoted words:

“No court or any independent investigation has substantiated any allegations that there has been systemic or widespread sexual harassment in Activision Blizzard... or that Activision Blizzard’s board of directors, including its chief executive officer, Robert Kotick, acted improperly with regard to the handling of any instances of workplace misconduct.”

Schreier reads it, and dismisses it, calling it “the core of this week’s outrage merchant argument,” and then pivots immediately into a fresh round of anonymous anecdotes as if that pivot answers the problem. It doesn’t. It sidesteps it.

Grummz Asked the Right Question

Grummz’s response cuts right to it:

“If Jason is so confident in his ‘truth’ he should name names and cite exactly what they did. I’m sure it would all hold up and not be slander and libel right? He can’t get sued if they are true facts. Oh wait, he only named 2 names that were in the CA lawsuit against Blizzard? Claims that were subsequently dropped by the State as reported by the NYT? Instead we get a lot of ‘people said’ and ‘it was well known’ and a lot of vague posting. Hmmmm!”

That’s the issue. Schreier’s video is loaded with phrases doing a lot of unverifiable lifting like “many women told me,” “it was well known,” “a common theme,” “six different women.” A handful of people go on record by name. The sweeping cultural claims rest on “many,” “several,” and “some,” which cannot be checked, cannot be cross-examined, and conveniently cannot be sued over either.

A Story Built to Generate Reaction, Not Resolve Anything

Notice the structure of the video itself. Schreier opens by framing his critics as bad-faith attention farmers feeding an “ecosystem that rewards people getting paid for spreading misinformation.” Then he spends the rest of the runtime doing exactly what he accuses them of, building a long, emotionally charged narrative heavy on scandal-adjacent details (a hotel party nickname, a tech department’s drinking habits, executive dating rumors) that generate outrage and shares, while the actual substantiated legal record says the opposite of what the narrative implies.

If the goal were clarity, the settlement language would be the headline, not a footnote he reads once and moves past. If the goal were accountability, the named allegations would stand on their own without needing forty minutes of unnamed “many women said” padding around them. Instead what you get is a video engineered to keep a three-year-old story alive, generate clicks off a controversial topic, and cast anyone questioning the framing as a liar before they’ve said a word.

Grummz noticed the same thing everyone should notice: when someone insists their story is airtight but won’t put names to most of it, that’s not caution. That’s the tell.

That last detail is what makes this shutdown different from a typical live-service sunset. Star Trek: Legends is built around substantial offline content: turn-based team combat, resource collection, and a hero-unlock system players can engage with entirely disconnected from any server. As GameRant’s own reporting put it, “Star Trek: Legends has extensive offline content that could still keep players engaged, but the publisher plans to take down the entire game, removing both its offline and online features.” There’s no technical reason a purely single-player mode needs to stop functioning when a publisher decides to move on. Tilting Point hasn’t given fans a specific reason for the shutdown at all, only thanking the community in a farewell message, but the timing and pattern point squarely at one explanation: licensing costs. Keeping the Star Trek name attached to a five-year-old mobile-turned-PC RPG with modest player numbers isn’t worth whatever Paramount charges to keep that license active, so the whole product gets erased rather than simply left alone to run offline for the people who already paid for it.

This isn’t an isolated case, either. Star Trek: Legends is the fourth Star Trek game delisted in roughly the past ten months. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova was pulled last September. Star Trek: Resurgence, a narrative adventure game that received genuinely positive reviews across most platforms, was delisted from Steam and Switch earlier this year despite that critical reception, an outcome that left plenty of players who’d been meaning to pick it up simply unable to. Paramount’s pattern of swapping and lapsing licenses across its game partners keeps producing the same result: functioning, purchased products disappearing entirely, regardless of quality or whether an offline mode exists that could have kept them playable indefinitely at zero ongoing cost to anyone.

This is exactly the practice a real consumer movement has spent the last two years trying to stop, and it’s worth understanding why that fight came up empty. Stop Killing Games, founded by Ross Scott after Ubisoft’s 2014 racing game The Crew was rendered permanently unplayable in 2024, built a formal European Citizens’ Initiative demanding publishers leave discontinued games “in a reasonably functional (playable) state” rather than remotely disabling them entirely. The campaign gathered 1,294,188 verified signatures, well past the one million threshold required to force a European Commission response, and was formally submitted in January 2026. On June 16, 2026, the Commission answered: no binding legislation. Citing intellectual property and copyright concerns, the Commission said it couldn’t legally require publishers to keep games playable after ending commercial support, offering instead a voluntary industry code of conduct to be developed by the end of 2026 and a consumer-awareness campaign about existing rights. Ross Scott’s response was blunt: “We can move on without the Commission and their non-decision,” confirming the movement is now pushing to fold its demands into the EU’s upcoming Digital Fairness Act instead, alongside a parallel effort in California, where AB 1921, the Protect Our Games Act, passed the state assembly in May requiring at least 60 days’ notice before a game shutdown.

A voluntary code of conduct, written by an industry that includes the same publishers currently deciding whether to strip offline modes from games they no longer want to support, isn’t a meaningful check on anything. Star Trek: Legends is a clean, specific example of exactly the gap Stop Killing Games was trying to close: a game with real offline content, no technical dependency on ongoing servers for most of what it offers, being made entirely unplayable anyway because a licensing relationship expired. Nobody who bought Star Trek: Legends is getting a refund, and nobody gets to keep playing the parts of it that never needed a server in the first place. When four installments of the same franchise get erased this way inside less than a year, the pattern stops looking like routine business housekeeping and starts looking like an open question worth asking directly: if a publisher can delete something you paid for at will, whether or not it ever needed their servers to function, what did you actually buy?

Microsoft’s July 6 announcement of 3,200 Xbox job cuts and five divested studios did not stay contained to a single press release. Across Bethesda, id Software, ZeniMax, and the wider Communications Workers of America membership inside Microsoft, the reaction has turned into a running record of an industry watching itself get gutted in real time.

The Bethesda Game Studios union put it bluntly, “In what is becoming a stressful annual routine, Microsoft has decided to lay off thousands, including MANY of us at Bethesda Games Studios,” the union posted. “With over 10k developers already cut from previous rounds, those at the top have deemed that insufficient in fixing their mistakes.” Reports to IGN said the cuts hit “key, high-performing people in the trenches” on The Elder Scrolls VI specifically, while ZeniMax as a whole lost 379 positions, with the Elder Scrolls Online team alone down more than 60 percent of its staff over the past year.

Id Software took a similar hit, losing roughly half its headcount at 136 roles. Studio co-founder John Carmack, who left id in 2013, addressed the cuts directly on X. “My ‘Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand’ statement isn’t aging well,” Carmack wrote, “and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month.” He added that he could not “muster anger or outrage” without access to the studio’s books, but said he believed reports that Minecraft revenue had been propping up other Xbox studios for years. A laid-off id VFX artist named Best was less measured on LinkedIn: “Great job Microsoft. Nothing says business success like nuking a team into the dirt and relegating them to support studio size while also throwing out massive technological achievements.” Former id animator Skai Chow’s message was shorter: “I hope our pain was worth it.”

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that the cuts have left surviving staff in a holding pattern rather than relief. “Knowing that a second wave of job cuts could come at any time has led to panic and anxiety among the thousands of people who work for the company,” Schreier wrote, adding that remaining employees are “being asked to do more with less” and fear that failing to do so “could be used as a reason to be fired in the next round.” Blizzard staff were reportedly told they would not learn how the reorganization affects them until “further communications,” according to Schreier’s reporting.

The union side of Microsoft’s workforce, which has organized more than 3,500 employees across the company since 2022, says the pattern predates this specific round of layoffs. ZeniMax Online union representative Morgan Goin told a press call that Microsoft’s own bargaining commitments have collapsed alongside its headcount. “I have been entrusted with the responsibility to advocate for my coworkers. I cannot do my job when Microsoft refuses to do theirs,” Goin said. “We’re being treated as expendable, valued one week and cut the next.” CWA District 9 vice president Frank Arce said bargaining hours with the union had dropped from around 12 hours a month to around four. Another union member, Veneto, described being moved into the office of a laid-off coworker and finding a child’s name bracelet left behind among ten years of packed-up belongings.

Reaction outside the company has run from bleak to sardonic. Screenwriter Craig Robert Cargill posted that Xbox executives “believe most of us will be out of work in the next 5 years, drawing from UBI. What will we do with all that time? XBox hopes we’ll spend our time and money with them.” One laid-off Xbox commerce and AI product manager, Kevin Flynn, had told LinkedIn followers weeks earlier that he had raised “PM AI adoption from 12% to 91% in 3 months” before he was cut alongside everyone else.

Xbox Gaming CEO Asha Sharma framed the cuts in a memo titled “Resetting Xbox,” writing bluntly, “Our business today is not healthy. We are operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. We must reset Xbox.” That statement arrived from a division that, per PC Gamer’s reporting, spent more than $80 billion on AI investment last year while cutting a fifth of its own workforce. Community response has organized around the United Videogames Union’s Game Worker Hardship Fund, open to any US or Canadian worker laid off from Xbox since January 2024 regardless of union membership, alongside an itch.io charity bundle organized by Necrosoft Games.

Five studios changed hands or shut down in the process: Ninja Theory, told its Hellblade franchise was ending just nine days after showing new footage at the Xbox Games Showcase; Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions, both released to find new ownership; Undead Labs, placed under review mid-development on State of Decay 3; and Arkane Lyon, facing closure alongside the cancellation of its Marvel’s Blade game. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told her own staff the division’s business is broken. In a memo posted to X on July 6, Sharma wrote that “our business today is not healthy” and that fixing it will require “painful” changes, starting with roughly 3,200 job cuts across Microsoft’s gaming division through fiscal year 2027. Half of those cuts hit immediately. Four studios left Xbox for new management the same day.

Sharma didn’t stop at “not healthy.” She told employees Xbox operates at margins three to ten times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses, a gap she attributed to years of bets that failed to pay off. Chief among them: Xbox Game Pass, the subscription model Microsoft has leaned on for growth since 2017. In her own words, that bet “created meaningful value, but did not grow at the pace” the company expected. A multi-platform release strategy and a wave of studio acquisitions fared no better, according to her memo.

The layoffs land on top of what Sharma called the most severe hardware crisis in Xbox’s history, driven by a DRAM shortage tied to AI infrastructure demand that has pushed console component costs to multiples of their 2025 levels. Microsoft is on pace to spend more than $100 billion on AI and cloud infrastructure this fiscal year, with roughly two-thirds of that going to AI chips. Xbox’s own workforce is paying the price for a division Microsoft’s leadership admits it can’t run profitably, while the parent company pours record capital into unrelated AI spending.

That contrast is exactly what set off the backlash spreading across X. Critics have been circulating Microsoft’s H-1B visa filings alongside the layoff numbers, framing the story as Sharma cutting 3,200 American jobs while Microsoft simultaneously files for thousands of H-1B visas. Xbox employees have not been shy about their own view of her leadership either. One told The HR Digest, “We went from Phil Spencer, who actually loved games, to someone who treats Xbox like just another P&L to optimize.” Another comment aimed at her track record before Xbox put it more bluntly: “It feels like she’s here to downsize, collect her package and move on.”

Sharma closed her memo with a promise that Xbox will return to growth next year and that these changes serve “a bigger future for Xbox, not a smaller one.” The math she laid out in the same memo says the current one isn’t working. Microsoft shares closed at $373.02 on June 30, down 19% for the month and near a 52-week low.

Xbox has cut thousands of jobs, closed or spun off five studios, and lost a chunk of its own workforce’s trust in a single week. If the business Sharma inherited was already unhealthy, why is the fix landing on American employees first while the visa filings keep coming?

Nine days after Ninja Theory appeared on stage at the Xbox Games Showcase to announce Senua, the third entry in the Hellblade franchise, the Cambridge studio’s employees were called into a meeting and told they were done. The announcement of a new game and the announcement of the studio’s closure arrived in the same two-week window. Nobody who bought a ticket to the showcase knew that the studio presenting its next project would not exist to finish it.

Ninja Theory, the Cambridge studio behind the Hellblade series, was confirmed closing on June 15. Compulsion Games, the Peabody Award-winning Montreal studio behind South of Midnight and We Happy Few, and Double Fine Productions, the San Francisco developer founded by Tim Schafer in 2000 and home to the Psychonauts series, are both in closure or buyout negotiations. Undead Labs, which employs around 110 people and has been developing State of Decay 3, is under review. Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Dishonored and Deathloop, is reportedly facing both closure and the outright cancellation of Marvel’s Blade, a superhero action game that had already slipped from a planned 2026 launch to late 2027.

Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan resigned on June 15, the same day the Compulsion closure was first reported.

The five studios share a profile that explains why they are the ones being cut. All are critically acclaimed. All produced mid-tier games rather than Call of Duty-scale releases. And all of them were entirely dependent on Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription model to reach their audiences. That dependence is what killed them. When a studio’s games launch on Game Pass on day one, subscribers play them without purchasing them. The studio gets a licensing fee. Microsoft gets the subscriber engagement data. The buy-to-play revenue that would have funded the next project never arrives.

South of Midnight drew more than one million Game Pass players within three weeks of launching. Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 remains one of the highest-reviewed games of the current generation. Ninja Theory’s Hellblade II won multiple awards. None of that mattered when Microsoft ran the numbers. Critical acclaim and commercial performance are measured separately inside Xbox’s accounting system, and Game Pass economics do not reward the kind of mid-budget creative studios that make a publisher’s catalog worth caring about.

The Xbox Reset memo that CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty published on Xbox Wire on June 10 is among the most candid admissions of strategic failure by a major platform holder in recent memory. Xbox will close fiscal year 2026 at approximately a 3% profitability margin, far short of the roughly 30% Microsoft requires of its major divisions. Excluding the $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition, the division spent more than $20 billion over five years on content, platform, and hardware subsidies, while annual revenue shrank by nearly $500 million over the same period. Gaming revenue fell 7% last quarter to $5.3 billion. Hardware sales dropped 33%.

Putting Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Game Pass on day one reportedly cost Microsoft an estimated $300 million in buy-to-play revenue. That was a bet that subscriber growth would offset the per-unit loss. The Reset memo says it did not.

The workers facing those cuts have had enough. The Communications Workers of America held a press conference with members of various Microsoft Xbox unions in response to the layoff reports. Frank Arce, vice president for CWA District 9, condemned the cuts, saying Microsoft workers “will not be treated as disposable.” One union representative pointed out Xbox’s recent console price hikes, saying “The money is there, leadership is simply choosing where it goes and who pays.”

Andrew Snell, a QA tester at Activision Publishing, said that Xbox unions would be joining forces to fight back. “We’re done paying for executives’ failures,” he said.

Overall, market conditions make Microsoft’s collapse look less like an isolated failure and more like the accelerating end of a model. An estimated 45,000 gaming industry jobs have been lost since 2022. The 2026 Game Developers Conference survey found that one in three US developers had been laid off in the previous two years, and that half of all respondents said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the past 12 months. At AAA studios specifically, two thirds of respondents reported the same. The global gaming market reached a record $195.6 billion in 2025. The industry has never made more money, and the people who make the games have never felt less secure.

Ubisoft Barcelona walked off the job June 30, opening a three-week strike running through July 16. Their demands: a binding agreement protecting 51 affected roles, a five-year guarantee against future collective layoffs, immediate execution of previously agreed promotions. EA was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund for $55 billion. Sony closed Bluepoint Games. The industry is consolidating into a smaller number of mega-publishers, each of which has decided it can extract more revenue from fewer studios. The developers in the middle, the ones making original mid-budget creative work, are the ones disappearing.

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer built Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, and Psychonauts across 26 years. Ninja Theory built two Hellblade games that treated mental illness with a care and craft that the industry rarely achieves. Compulsion built We Happy Few and won a Peabody for South of Midnight. These are not the studios that failed. These are the studios that succeeded at everything except being large enough to matter to Microsoft’s balance sheet.

Does the Game Pass model bear responsibility for killing the studios it was supposed to support, or did Microsoft simply overpay for too many acquisitions and someone had to take the loss?
